Warning: This post contains spoilers for Saw X!
Summary
The post-credits sequence of Saw X pays homage to the original movie by revisiting the iconic bathroom scene.
Dedicated efforts were made by the production team to meticulously recreate the bathroom, carefully studying the tiles and ensuring every detail was accurately replicated.
The success of Saw X has the potential to pave the way for another installment in the franchise, especially considering the presence of Hoffman in the post-credits scene.
In the post-credits sequence of the sequel, Saw X, production designer Anthony Stabley and his team made a concerted effort to pay homage to the original film. The latest installment in the Saw franchise is set between the events of the first movie and Saw II, released in 2005. This time, the spotlight is on Tobin Bell's character, John Kramer, as he embarks on a journey to Mexico for a medical procedure to treat his cancer. However, when he discovers that the procedure is a fraudulent scheme targeting the vulnerable, John is determined to teach the perpetrators a lesson using his signature Jigsaw methods.
In the post-credit scene of Saw X, John can be seen inflicting torture upon the con-man who initially introduced him to the fraudulent medical procedure. To everyone's surprise, Costas Mandylor's infamous antagonist, Mark Hoffman, joins in. However, the connection to the original Saw lies in the fact that this scene unfolds in the renowned bathroom that served as the primary location in the 2004 horror classic. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, production designer Stabley explained the meticulous process of studying the original film's bathroom in order to faithfully recreate it. He stated, "We carefully examined the tile and were extremely precise in our replication. Our set designers faced some challenges in ensuring its faithfulness, but we were genuinely thrilled to recreate such an iconic element."
What Saw X Could Mean For The Future Of The Franchise
Saw X has garnered the highest number of positive reviews and achieved the best domestic opening weekend out of all the movies in the series since 2010. This is an impressive accomplishment considering it is the tenth film in a franchise that has had its ups and downs. The movie successfully brings back the essence of the series, with particular praise for the portrayal of John Kramer and his apprentice Amanda by Shawnee Smith. Additionally, Saw X tackles John's battles with the profit-driven healthcare system, similar to the standout moments in Saw VI where John confronted the private insurance industry.
As for the possibility of a Saw 11, the post-credits scene featuring Hoffman suggests that another installment could be in the works. However, the creative team is being cautious and has not committed to a follow-up yet. Director Kevin Greutert mentioned in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that they are "superstitious about discussing" potential sequels until they see how this movie performs at the box office. Considering the praise and the promising box office performance of the new film, it is highly likely that Jigsaw and his infamous games will make a comeback.
