The Black Phone, directed by Scott Derrickson and co-written with C. Robert Cargill, is a psychological, supernatural horror movie based on a short story by Joe Hill, the son of Stephen King. Released in 2021, it has been recognized as one of the scariest films of the year. Now available on Amazon Prime, viewers can discover the suspenseful ending and witness if Finney successfully escapes from The Grabber.
Set in the late 1970s, the story revolves around a Denver suburb plagued by a notorious figure known as "The Grabber" (played by Ethan Hawke), a serial kidnapper and murderer who entices children with magic tricks and balloons, only to abduct them and confine them to his basement.
One of his victims, a young boy named Finney (portrayed by Mason Thames), finds himself caught in The Grabber's clutches. However, he refuses to comply with The Grabber's demands, especially when he starts receiving mysterious phone calls from the deceased. And this is how it all concludes.
The Black Phone ending explained: Does Finney escape?
The Black Phone ends with Finney brutally killing The Grabber and escaping his house, finding Gwen and the police waiting outside, before they reunite with their father.
In the film, we discover that The Grabber had abducted five children prior to Finney. These children are Bruce, Billy, Griffin, Vance, and Robin, who happens to be a close companion of Finney.
One day, while in the basement, an unrelated phone suddenly starts ringing. It is then that Finney realizes that he is communicating with the spirits of the five children who were tragically murdered by The Grabber. They provide him with the necessary means to escape, whether it be through digging a hole or receiving fighting lessons from Robin.
Following the demise of his brother, who stumbled upon Finney in the basement, The Grabber endeavors to eliminate Finney himself. However, he unwittingly falls into a carefully laid trap. As he tugs on the cable snatched from the wall, he loses his footing, plunges into a hole, fracturing his leg in the process. Capitalizing on this opportunity, Finney strikes him with a phone filled with sand and proceeds to strangle him, ultimately breaking his neck.
Finney takes a steak from the freezer to divert the dog's attention, then proceeds upstairs and steps outside. It becomes evident that their residence is conveniently situated directly across from the burial ground, and Gwen notices Finney standing alone. They hug each other, and their alcoholic father pleads for their forgiveness for how he has mistreated them.
Regarding Gwen's visions that initially led the police to discover the corpses, Cargill disclosed to The Hollywood Reporter: "At the start, we witness Gwen as the one possessing supernatural abilities and assisting her brother, which requires a delicate balance."
However, as the pieces are assembled, it becomes apparent that Gwen possesses approximately fifty percent of her mother's abilities, while Finney possesses the remaining fifty percent. The difference lies in the fact that Finney has not encountered these powers previously, making this his inaugural encounter with them.
Furthermore, the phone serves as a channel for these powers, which were inherited by both siblings from their mother.
