The Marvels, featuring Brie Larson, is set for a disappointing start at the box office, with opening projections between $70-$80 million.
The bleak outlook of the film is attributed to the unfavorable response from fans towards Brie Larson and the overall exhaustion surrounding the current phase of the MCU. This, in turn, raises concerns about the future of the franchise and the likelihood of a third film or significant involvement of its characters.
The Marvels may not be able to overcome a negative box office record as originally anticipated. The upcoming theatrical release of Brie Larson's film is expected to have a disappointing start.
In the Captain Marvel sequel, titled The Marvels, two new characters join the story: Iman Vellani's Ms. Marvel and Teyonah Parris' Monica Rambeau, who were introduced in the series Ms. Marvel and WandaVision, respectively. Despite the first Captain Marvel film being a commercial success, earning over a billion dollars at the box office, the outlook for the sequel has been bleak from the beginning. With the current phase of the MCU facing general fatigue and negative fan reactions towards Larson, there were concerns that The Marvels would face a major setback in terms of box office performance.
A recent report by The Hollywood Reporter confirms that The Marvels is projected to disappoint at the box office. With a conservative estimate, the film's opening is currently projected to be between $70-80 million dollars. This falls short of its predecessor, Captain Marvel, which garnered a welcoming $153.4 million.
Although some may see it as a worst-case scenario, even more optimistic estimates suggest that The Marvels will earn around $90 million, placing it below the majority of MCU films. Out of the franchise's 32 releases, 25 have exceeded $100 million in opening revenue. In contrast, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania had a disappointing start with only $57.2 million at the box office. However, this was partially compensated by Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which earned over $100 million and fell just short of a billion by the end of its theatrical run. Given its rumored short runtime, The Marvels may have a lackluster box office debut that goes unnoticed.
Despite Marvel Studios' confidence in the property, it appears that The Marvels will face several challenges. The predicted poor opening and overall performance, combined with the reported harassment faced by Avengers star Larson from toxic fans, make it unlikely for a third film or significant role for any characters in The Marvels moving forward. This is particularly unfortunate for Parris' Monica Rambeau, who has only had a minor role in a largely unrelated Disney Plus show thus far.
The Marvels, despite being marketed as a unique project with more depth than the typical MCU film, may not find success with this fatigue-mitigation approach from Feige. Previous attempts to deviate from the formula have seldom resulted in newer projects achieving the same level of impact as the first three phases of the MCU. While it remains uncertain to what extent The Marvels will succeed or fail, these predictions suggest a grim outcome, potentially culminating in a disappointing performance at the box office. The Marvels is scheduled for a theatrical release on November 10, 2023.
