King Charles and Queen Camilla have concluded their highly anticipated official trip to France, spending their last day in the southwestern region of the country.

During their time in Bordeaux, a region with strong historical connections to Britain, the couple had the opportunity to explore a Royal Navy frigate, interact with local businesses, and gain insights into the destructive consequences of the wildfires that occurred last year.

Following the outbreak of significant protests over pension reforms six months ago, Bordeaux, along with Paris, experienced immense disruption. As a result, the planned royal visit had to be postponed. Instead, Charles and Camilla embarked on their inaugural international journey to Germany.

The British monarch and his wife have had a series of successful days. On Wednesday, the King and Queen were warmly welcomed by their French hosts at the iconic Paris Arc de Triomphe. The event was marked by a grand display of pageantry, including a symbolic lighting ceremony and a spectacular flypast performance.

The King and President Emmanuel Macron seemed to have a strong bond, as evident from their relaxed and affectionate body language, reflecting a genuine and warm friendship.

Undoubtedly, one of the highlights of the visit will be Charles' speech on Thursday at the French senate, situated in the grand Palais du Luxembourg. It is a rare privilege bestowed upon only a select few heads of state to address the upper house of the French parliament, making it highly appreciated by the audience.

French President Emmanuel Macron rolled out the red carpet for King Charles III.

The atmosphere was filled with anticipation as the 74-year-old monarch entered the opulent room. Despite the parliamentary recess, eager lawmakers came back a week ahead to occupy the chamber, showing their joy.

Charles did not disappoint in the big moment. He confidently incorporated a significant portion of the speech in French, emphasizing the profound historical bonds shared by the two allies. Notably, Charles was present in response to the UK government's invitation, and although the final approval of the speech was in their hands, the influence of the monarch was evident. Unlike previous rulers who might have relied solely on provided remarks, this monarch actively participated in crafting the speech.

The King delivered a few jokes - although not as many as during his speech at Berlins Bundestag in March - and employed his most forceful rhetoric as he reaffirmed his unwavering support for the Ukrainian people in the face of Russia's unwarranted aggression and emphasized the pressing urgency of the climate crisis.

The politicians gave a lengthy standing ovation as Charles's words received more praise than he anticipated. Uncertain of how to react, he remained standing until the applause ceased.

Furthermore, emphasizing green initiatives appears to be a recurring theme in King Charles's state visits. During both his recent trip and his visit to Germany, he actively participated in numerous events centered around conservation, sustainability, and other environmental matters.

While royal journeys are customarily adapted to suit each individual, it might have been assumed that this would cease for Charles upon assuming the role of sovereign. However, he is embracing the integration of such personalized experiences—his approach to ensuring that the focus remains on the causes that hold significance to him, all while adhering to the limitations imposed by his new position.

The King drew criticism on Friday for flying between Paris and Bordeaux, as France has banned some short-haul flights to lower greenhouse gas emissions. Palace officials cited security concerns for changing the original plan of traveling by train, after media leaks.

During the trip, French news broadcasters dedicated special programming to cover every aspect, while newspaper front pages focused on how Charles was strengthening the French-UK relationship amidst previous divisive events such as Brexit.

The palace and governments on both sides of the Channel will be pleased with how Charles’ state visit to France has unfolded, especially considering the interruption during his inaugural visit back in March.
