The Legend of Korra: Unveiling the Father of Toph's Children

With the immense popularity of Avatar: The Last Airbender, it came as no surprise when the creators decided to produce a spin-off series called The Legend of Korra in 2012. Acting as a sort of prequel, The Legend of Korra continues the story after Avatar Aang, focusing on a young woman named Korra from the water tribe. One of the highlights of this series is the interaction between Korra and the new characters, as well as the return of beloved characters from the original show. This allows fans to see what happened to their favorites during the time between the shows.

While it doesn't occur frequently, the main cast of characters from ATLA do make cameo appearances in Korra, each serving a unique role in the storyline (some purely for entertainment purposes). One vital moment in the series finds Korra going through a transformative and introspective journey, where she encounters Toph. Toph, who was a child in ATLA, has aged significantly and becomes a mentor-like figure to Korra. Additionally, Korra introduces the audience to Toph's children, who play significant roles throughout the show. Interestingly, the identity of the children's father is never confirmed, leading to numerous fan theories about who Toph may have had them with.

Who Is Toph?

In Avatar: The Last Airbender, the audience is introduced to Toph Beifong as a young girl whom Aang, Katara, and Sokka encounter on their journey. Despite her young age and blindness since birth, Toph possesses remarkable talent in earthbending. Over time, she becomes a master in this skill. Toph's blindness does not hinder her abilities; instead, she relies on her feet and earthbending to sense vibrations in the ground, allowing her to navigate and perceive her surroundings. She also utilizes this ability to detect deception. Toph's earthbending skills were acquired from the original earthbenders, known as the badgermoles.

Despite growing up in privilege and being coddled by her overprotective parents, Toph consistently rebels against them. Her personality is characterized by her prickly nature, independence, sarcasm, and stubbornness, which she retains into adulthood. In The Legend of Korra, when Korra encounters Toph, she is residing in The Foggy Swamp. Toph discovers Korra unconscious and assists her in recovering her strength. She assures Korra that she is an old friend from her past life as Aang. During this time, Korra faces mental health and bending challenges, and Toph becomes her mentor, guiding her towards regaining her lost confidence.

Toph's Family in The Legend of Korra

In The Legend of Korra, Toph’s two adult daughters, Suyin and Lin, play a significant role. Suyin not only established the city-state of Zaofu but also formed a family of her own. Meanwhile, Lin succeeded Toph as the Chief of Police in Republic City. Both sisters possessed formidable metalbending abilities, an earthbending variant pioneered by their mother. This was due to the fact that metals, being a part of the earth, could be manipulated through earthbending.

Toph, having grown up in a restrictive environment, took the opposite approach with her own children, encouraging them to forge their own paths. However, there was a period of estrangement between Toph and her daughters following an incident in their youth. Lin pursued a career in law enforcement, while Suyin followed a rebellious path and became associated with the wrong crowd. Lin apprehended Suyin during an attempted escape after a robbery, and brought her to Toph, who was still serving as Chief of Police at the time. Aware of the scandal that would arise if the Police Chief's daughter went to jail, Toph destroyed the police report and sent Suyin to live with her parents. This decision infuriated Lin, as she felt it allowed Suyin to escape consequences for her actions. It took many years for both Lin and Suyin to reconcile with Toph, with Lin taking longer to eventually mend their relationship.

Who Did Toph Have Children With?

Toph kept the identity of her daughters' parents a secret, causing tension between them. After two decades, Toph revealed that Lin's father is Kanto. Their relationship did not last, and six years later, Toph had another daughter, Suyin, whose father remains unknown. Due to the mystery surrounding Suyin's father, fans have come up with various theories.

There have been several Avatar: The Last Airbender sequel comics released, one of which features Toph establishing a metalbending academy. In this story, Toph encounters a character named Satoru, who bears a resemblance to Suyin according to fans. However, there is no conclusive evidence to support the theory. Satoru is not a major character, and the resemblance is the main basis for this speculation.

There is another prevalent theory suggesting that Sokka was Suyin's father. Before The Legend of Korra, Sokka had already passed away, which could possibly explain why Suyin might not have recognized him. Some fans have also pointed out the resemblance between Sokka and Suyin's own children. However, it should be noted that although Toph had a crush on Sokka in ATLA, there is no evidence of his feelings being reciprocated in any official materials. The main reason why this theory is unlikely is that it contradicts Sokka's character to have a child and not be present in their life. If Sokka were truly Suyin's father, he would have played a significant role in her life.
