The highly anticipated season 2 of The Last of Us will not be released until 2025, as production is set to start in 2024.
Production delays were caused by the recent Hollywood strike, impacting the filming schedule of numerous projects. Nevertheless, fans can remain assured that the series is utilizing this time to ensure a high-quality outcome, as season 2 is expected to match the emotionally gripping episodes of the first season.
Fans of The Last of Us have anxiously awaited news on season 2, but recent updates may not live up to their expectations. The show portrays a distressingly realistic world, where the few remaining humans struggle against those infected with the Cordyceps fungus. Joel Miller (played by Pedro Pascal), a troubled loner, reluctantly agrees to escort young Ellie (portrayed by Bella Ramsey) to a group of terrorists who plan to use her to save humanity. As they journey together, Joel becomes fiercely protective of Ellie, forging a deep bond. Pascal's performance as Joel has been praised for his portrayal, taking over the role from Troy Baker, while Ramsey has captivated audiences with her portrayal of Ellie.
After concluding its nine-episode season in March, fans have eagerly awaited news about The Last of Us season 2. According to Variety, production for the highly-anticipated season will commence soon. Unfortunately, filming for the series has been delayed until 2024, causing its premiere date to be pushed further into the future. Absent from HBO's 2024 schedule presentation, it is likely that season 2 of The Last of Us won't be released until 2025, at the earliest.
The filming of many projects, including Daredevil: Born Again and The Penguin series, was delayed due to the dual Hollywood strike. The Writers Guild of America initiated picketing in May 2023 due to a lack of residuals, followed closely by the Screen Actors Guild. Speculation arises that video game companies might also face similar strikes. While the WGA has resolved its strike and can now focus on scriptwriting, SAG-AFTRA is still in negotiations. Concerns among actors persist regarding the rise of AI technology in the industry, potentially replacing actors without adequate compensation.
Although showrunner Craig Mazin has expressed his eagerness to write, the show cannot progress without its actors. Setting an optimistic production start date for early 2024, it is hoped that the studios will fairly compensate the actors to facilitate their return to work. However, even if production commences early next year, fans might have to wait for a considerable period to see season 2. The first season of The Last of Us took a year to complete, justified by its emotionally intense episodes that would be difficult for season 2 to surpass. If the series requires additional time to ensure quality, it would likely be the wisest decision.
The Last of Us season 1 is streaming on Max.

As a Gen Z netizen, I'm both excited and disheartened by the news regarding The Last of Us season 2. On one hand, I can't wait to see the continuation of Joel and Ellie's journey in this post-apocalyptic world. The first season left me emotionally invested in their characters and the story, and I'm eager to see how their relationship develops further. I'm also curious to explore more of the infected and the different factions vying for power.
On the other hand, I'm disappointed that we have to wait until 2025 for the release of season 2. The wait is going to be tough, especially considering how much I enjoyed the first season. I understand that production delays are inevitable, but it's still frustrating to have to wait so long for new episodes. I hope that the wait will be worth it and that season 2 will live up to the high standards set by season 1.
In the meantime, I'll be keeping myself occupied by rewatching season 1 and reading up on the lore of the game. I'm also looking forward to checking out other post-apocalyptic TV shows and movies to tide me over until The Last of Us season 2 finally arrives.
