If Ellie hadn't been the main focus of The Last of Us Part 2, she wouldn't have seemed like the obvious choice for the protagonist in The Last of Us Part 3. However, the tragic cliffhanger in Part 2 suggests that her story could continue in a future installment. Although rumored leaks may challenge this possibility, there is still potential for the story to revolve around Ellie in an interesting way, even if she is not the protagonist as she has been in the previous entries. While Ellie's immunity may not be as important as it once was, the character herself remains significant.
It would be great to see other characters given the same amount of screen time as Ellie has had, particularly if they are given equal opportunities for development and challenges. It is natural for the franchise to evolve with new characters, considering the attention to detail and world-building that has been put into it. However, incorporating Ellie into the lives of these new characters could provide fans with a different perspective that they may have felt lacking in The Last of Us Part 2. Despite being a beloved character, Ellie should be reintroduced as if she were just one of the many survivors players could encounter in the world.
Ellie Should Show Up as an Ordinary Survivor NPC in The Last of Us Part 3
Instead of being a playable character herself, it would be incredible to have Ellie accompany the player and the new protagonist on their journey. Ellie could appear as a wandering survivor whose path intersects with the player's. Fans would immediately recognize her when she suddenly arrives, but for the new protagonist, learning about Ellie would offer a fresh perspective.
Realistically, Ellie could be left on her own for the foreseeable future, given where she ended up in Part 2. However, if Naughty Dog wants to tie up any loose ends for her, they could do so by including Ellie as a non-playable character. Although fans would likely prefer a third installment featuring Ellie as the sole protagonist, it wouldn't be satisfying if Naughty Dog didn't dedicate another entire game's worth of storytelling and character development to her.
The Last of Us' multiplayer spin-off could benefit from featuring an entirely new cast of characters, enhancing the narrative coherence. However, if Part 3 goes down this path, it would indicate Naughty Dog's genuine intention to expand the series beyond its beloved mascot characters. Another possibility is that the third game could solely focus on Abby and Lev, a bold move considering the backlash directed at Abby in Part 2.
Regardless, if Ellie were to return, her presence would need to be justified logically, rather than a mere attempt to connect the game to an iconic character. If Part 3 introduces a group of survivors unfamiliar to fans, Ellie's appearance and her need to prove herself trustworthy would be intriguing, especially for those who already know her.
New characters could evaluate her solely based on her future decisions, free from the burden of her past actions. If Ellie can establish herself anew with different survivors and forge a distinct identity in The Last of Us, there is still much about her character that players can uncover in potential future installments. Unconfirmed reports suggest that The Last of Us Part 3 is currently in preliminary stages of development.
