The Last of Us: Jesse's Unfortunate Fate Revealed!

The Last of Us: Jesse's Unfortunate Fate Revealed!

The Last of Us Part 2's Jesse is a beloved character, but his untimely exit leaves his arc feeling unfinished, depriving players of the closure they crave in this emotionally charged and nuanced game

Highlights

The Last of Us 2 takes storytelling risks, with a less focused and linear narrative compared to the first game, introducing more characters and plot threads.

Jesse's fleeting presence as a likable character deprives the story of emotional attachment and impact when he meets his swift demise. The disappointing lack of closure surrounding Jesse's character renders his death disposable, failing to make a lasting impression on the overall narrative.

The Last of Us quickly earned the reputation of being one of the best games on its original PS3 platform. Over the years, its reputation has surpassed that of many other titles. While not necessary, a sequel was released in 2020, titled The Last of Us 2. However, this release was not without controversy, as some people had issues with the story being told.

The story of The Last of Us 2 takes risks and deliberately deviates from the focus and linearity of the first game. More characters are brought to the forefront, and while some shine, others are neglected and poorly handled at times. Jesse, though having apparent strengths, unfortunately fails to leave a lasting impression and meets an abrupt end.

Jesse is Likable, but Inconsequential

The Last of Us: Jesse's Unfortunate Fate Revealed!

Ellie's desperate pursuit of revenge and Abby's journey towards redemption form the core narrative of The Last of Us 2, highlighting their fateful connection through personal losses. While this storyline successfully engages players, the second game expands its scope by introducing a diverse cast of characters. In addition to Joel and Ellie, the game explores Tommy's struggle with Joel's death, Dina's pregnancy, and Isaac's control over the Washington Liberation Front. Amidst this ensemble, Jesse, initially portrayed as one of Ellie's friends in Jackson and a participant in her complicated romantic relationship, often gets overshadowed. Despite his loyal and supportive nature, his limited presence in the story prevents players from forming a significant emotional connection. Consequently, his abrupt demise fails to carry the desired impact within the larger, emotionally charged narrative.

Closure is Scarce in The Last of Us 2

The Last of Us: Jesse's Unfortunate Fate Revealed!

Jesse's potential in The Last of Us 2 warranted more screen time. Although his presence is brief in the first half of the game, his untimely death by Abby's hands prevents any further development of his character throughout the 2020 game. Similar to the unexpected giraffe scene in the 2013 game, Jesse's demise is disturbing yet impactful solely for that moment, without leaving a lasting impression.

The lack of closure for Jesse's character is unsatisfying, ultimately making him dispensable. Furthermore, the narrative moves forward as Dina and Ellie become parents to Jesse's child. If the next mainline installment delves into the devastating consequences faced by Dina and Ellie's family, it is possible that Jesse won't even be a topic of conversation anymore.

However, it is possible for him to find some form of resolution in a future game. Joel's fate was just as abrupt as Jesse's, and a significant portion of the initial hours in The Last of Us 2 is dedicated to grieving Ellie's father figure, after Abby mercilessly ends his life. In many ways, Ellie spends most of the story seeking closure for Joel, even if she is unwilling or unable to acknowledge it. However, Jesse's character is not as beloved by fans, so his sudden demise feels more like a lack of resolution rather than an exhilarating twist.

The Last of Us Part 2 can be played on PS4.
