Peter Sarsgaard and Maggie Gyllenhaal are as solid as ever after 14 years of marriage, and he believes the reason is "simple."

When asked about the key to a long-lasting romance, the 52-year-old actor told E! News that he only has one strategy: "Tell the truth. Isn't that all there is? It's pretty simple. It's not that complicated. Isn't that the secret to any friendship or relationship?" Sarsgaard firmly believes that honesty is the best policy, stating, "Otherwise, even if it's a nice lie, even if it's a lie to prop someone up or help them avoid what they're trying to avoid, you're not living in reality. And that's the only place to live in."

Sarsgaard and Jake Gyllenhaal were close friends before he started dating Jake's sister in 2002. They got engaged in 2006 and tied the knot three years later in Brindisi, Italy. The couple shares two daughters, Ramona, 17, and Gloria, 11.

Sarsgaard also shared details about his marriage and holiday traditions, mentioning a special midnight mass at a church that he and Maggie attend, where they sometimes sing.

The couple has mostly kept their family life private since becoming parents, but Maggie opened up about the unexpected challenges of raising children during a 2019 Q&A. At the time, her eldest daughter was in eighth grade, and Maggie admitted that she wasn't able to help her with math. However, she enjoys reading her daughter's essays and discussing the books she's reading, as she studied literature and is able to provide guidance in that area.

Sarsgaard, on the other hand, is the designated "music enthusiast" in their household. "He firmly believes that acquiring the skill to read and play music is just as crucial as mastering any other subject in school," Maggie revealed. "I can only read music at a kindergarten level. I lack the discipline for it, but he truly excels at it. He has successfully taught both of my daughters how to play musical instruments."
