The Juicy Secrets Behind the Deleted Scenes in ‘Barbie’: Ken's Kiss, Timothée Chalamet's Cameo, and More Revealed!

Greta Gerwig fights for key scenes in 'Barbie' but sacrifices cameos by Saoirse Ronan and Timothée Chalamet, Barbie and Ken's kiss, Emma Mackey and Margot Robbie's lookalike joke, and a bizarre Barbie and Ken scene

Saoirse Ronan and Timothée Chalamet’s Cameos

Despite Barbie having it all - girl power, a great sense of humor, and an impressive array of pink shades that exceeded our prior knowledge - director Greta Gerwig had to make some difficult choices when she edited the colossal blockbuster.

Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling starred as the main characters Barbie and Ken in the film, which was released in theaters on July 21st. However, director Gerwig originally had plans for Saoirse Ronan and Timothée Chalamet to have smaller roles in the film. Gerwig had previously worked with Ronan and Chalamet on her directorial debut, "Lady Bird," in 2017, as well as the 2019 remake of "Little Women."

In an interview with CinemaBlend, Gerwig explained that Ronan's involvement was limited due to her role as a producer at the time. Despite this, Gerwig expressed pride in Ronan's achievements and referred to their planned roles as "specialty cameos."

Unfortunately, Ronan's schedule didn't align, and subsequent obstacles hindered Chalamet from making an appearance. "I had plans for a special cameo with Timmy as well, but regrettably, both of them were unable to participate, leaving me quite annoyed. Nevertheless, my affection for them remains unwavering," Gerwig expressed.

Barbie and Ken’s Kiss

The romantic aspect of the movie Barbie is not prominent. Despite Robbie's Barbie being in a relationship with Gosling's Ken, the doll prefers to spend nights with her girlfriends, and neither of them have a clear understanding of how Ken should behave if he stays overnight at the Dreamhouse.

During a recent joint interview with Robbie, Gosling shared that he and Robbie made an amusing effort to imagine how their characters would kiss. However, he expressed relief that those scenes were ultimately omitted.

Emma Mackey and Margot Robbie’s Lookalike Joke

Robbie revealed to BuzzFeed in early July that he has been constantly compared to Emma Mackey, the actress from Sex Education. Describing their resemblance, he mentioned how both he and Emma could easily pass off as Barbie dolls in a movie. Robbie and Greta had initially planned to play a prank, highlighting their striking similarities.

Mackey bore a striking resemblance to Robbie during the initial episodes of the popular Netflix series, which premiered in 2019, thanks to her blonde hair. However, when Mackey reverted back to her natural brunette locks and added bangs to frame her face, the joke fell flat.

"We dressed up as our Barbies and realized we didn't actually look that alike," Robbie jokingly recounted. "So, we decided not to include that joke in the movie since Mackey had brown hair and I had blonde hair."

Robbie graciously accepts compliments for Mackey's work. When approached by fans expressing their love for his role in Sex Education, Robbie simply responds, "Thank you. Thank you so much," with gratitude.

Although the lookalike joke didn't make it into the Barbie movie, Gerwig and Robbie, both executive producers of the film, showed their admiration for Sex Education. Additionally, Mackey's Netflix co-stars, Ncuti Gatwa and Connor Swindells, join the cast of Barbie, portraying Ken and a Mattel intern.

Weird Barbie and Ken’s Scene

A new image has been released by Warner Bros., offering a glimpse behind-the-scenes of Weird Barbie's world. In this captivating photo, Kate McKinnon portrays the charismatic character, relaxing in a luxurious Dreamhouse pool. By her side, Ken is seen finding solace, resting his head gently on her lap. Remarkably, the image captures Weird Barbie's hand resting on Ken's exposed chest, while another figure, Gerwig, is depicted attempting to stifle her laughter behind a covered mouth. Intrigue surrounds this moment. Will Ken forge a new path with Weird Barbie? Is he on the cusp of unraveling the mysteries and excitement of a sleepover? Regrettably, the answers to these burning questions may forever remain elusive. Nevertheless, the desire to uncover the secrets held within this deleted scene is undeniable.

Despite having to make some cuts, Gerwig made sure to include a significant scene in her film. The scene shows Barbie encountering an older woman in the real world and complimenting her beauty. Gerwig expressed her admiration for this scene during an interview with Rolling Stone on July 3. The woman on the bench in the scene is Ann Roth, a renowned costume designer. Although the moment may seem insignificant and doesn't contribute directly to the plot, Gerwig believed that cutting it would undermine the essence of the entire movie.

She expressed, "This is essentially how I perceived it. In my opinion, this particular scene is the essence of the movie. The way Margot portrays that moment is incredibly delicate and natural. While there are more extravagant aspects in the film that may make people exclaim, 'Oh my goodness, I can't believe Mattel allowed this,' or, 'I can't believe Warner Bros. allowed this,' for me, the most astonishing part is that this insignificant subplot, which doesn't contribute much to the overall story, remains in the final cut — and yet it holds the true essence of the movie."

Currently, Barbie is being shown in theaters.
