Determined to return to Lincoln, Tunstall knew that Catron, Murphy, and Brady would take advantage of his absence.

Despite his dire condition, Tunstall refused to compromise when faced with a threatening offer from Edgar Walz, a Catron employee and relative. Walz insisted Tunstall sell his cattle ranch, bank, and general store to Catron at a reasonable price. Even on his potential deathbed, Tunstall stood firm and rejected Walz's demands. In response, Walz made it clear that Tunstall's life would be in danger if he survived smallpox. Overcoming the illness, Tunstall returned to Lincoln with a newfound fear of the actions Catron and Murphy would take if he ignored their warning.

Nonetheless, Billy and the Regulators comply and arrive at the jail, offering Jesse Evans and his gang alcohol while bribing Brady to arrange a jailbreak that very night. Brady accepts the bribe and instructs his deputies to place rocks by the jail door, simulating the appearance of a genuine break-in. Despite being taken aback, Jesse and his gang genuinely appreciate the efforts made by Billy and the Regulators.

2 The Jesse Evans Gang Betrays The Regulators After The Jailbreak

In an unexpected turn of events, the Regulators extend their kindness to the Jesse Evans Gang, offering them refuge and nourishment following their daring jailbreak.
