Home Alone 2: Lost in New York has become a beloved Christmas classic, and some may argue that it surpasses the original film.
When we reflect on iconic Christmas movies, the 1990 film Home Alone often comes to mind. It resonated with numerous viewers, leading to the creation of a sequel titled Home Alone 2: Lost in New York shortly after. However, this installment did not receive as much acclaim, with a Critics' Score of only 35% on Rotten Tomatoes, though it did achieve a 62% audience score.
The sequel follows the misadventures of Kevin McCallister as he finds himself alone in New York City. In his usual style, Kevin outwits his way into the Plaza Hotel but soon faces off against the Sticky Bandits, determined to stop them from robbing a toy store before Christmas. Despite stiff competition from the original, Home Alone 2 stands as a strong contender for the best movie in the series.
The stakes are higher – and so are the hijinks
Although the plot of this movie remains the same as the previous one (as is often the case with sequels), we believe that this movie still manages to feel unique by raising the stakes. Not only is there a greater incentive to stop the Wet Bandits, with the charity money at risk, but the actions Kevin takes to protect the money are truly iconic.
The characters are more memorable
Home Alone 2 is just as memorable as the first film, if not more so. From setting Marv on fire to electrocuting Harry into a skeleton, the movie is filled with deadly traps that defy reality. While some may argue that Home Alone 2 is too similar to the original, the sociopathic violence of a child is undeniably what captivates audiences.
The sequel expertly balances familiar elements with fresh additions, particularly in its introduction of new characters. While Home Alone 2 features beloved characters such as Harry, Marv, Buzz, and Kevin’s mother from the first film, it also introduces iconic figures like the Bird Lady and the memorable staff at the Plaza hotel. Additionally, the cameo of Donald Trump, while controversial, leaves a lasting impression.
Culkin still exudes his boyish charm, proving the enduring significance of his character Kevin, despite not being as young and "cute" as his 8-year-old self.
Tim Curry being Tim Curry
Is this a mere extension of our previous point? Indeed. However, does Tim Curry merit a dedicated section solely for his outstanding performance in this film? Absolutely.
Curry truly excels as the slick receptionist of the Plaza Hotel, and it's easy to find oneself more invested in his rivalry with Kevin than in the conflict with the Wet Bandits. Additionally, anything featuring Tim Curry instantly becomes a classic in our eyes.
It still has the heart of Christmas
The initial film was undeniably filled with holiday spirit, but there's truly something special about a Christmas movie set in New York. Surrounded by skyscrapers, twinkling lights, and snowfall, it's simply impossible not to be swept up in the festivities while watching.
Home Alone 2 has managed to stand the test of time as a sequel
Their second reunion manages to be just as heartwarming as the first, possibly thanks to the impressive performances by Culkin and Catherine O’Hara, carrying on the film's theme of the significance of family during the holiday season.
Home Alone 2: Lost in New York is remembered for more than just being the only sequel with Macauley Culkin. During the holiday season, it was often shown on TV more than the original, showing how much networks and audiences value it. Despite being over 30 years old, the movie has become a Christmas classic. The sequel draws on similar visuals and plots as the first, but has become iconic in its own right. If you haven't rewatched the sequel recently, we highly recommend it. And Merry Christmas, ya filthy animal!
