Sonic Superstars offered special cel-shaded character skins for Sonic and his friends, but they disappeared from the Steam version shortly after the game's launch.
The reason for their removal remains unclear, with various theories ranging from technical glitches to specific issues related to the PC port of the game.
Although the comic-based skins are no longer accessible, players can still obtain the LEGO Sonic skin for free, while the rest of the skins require a purchase.
In an unexpected turn of events, fascinating Sonic Superstars character skin DLC disappeared from Steam after only 20 minutes of availability. Sega concluded a thrilling year for its lightning-fast platforming mascot with Sonic Superstars, a vibrant 2D side-scrolling game where Sonic and his companions race through new locations to thwart the villainous Dr. Eggman, along with his henchmen Fang the Hunter and Trip. Sonic Superstars allows players to zoom around at top speed in four-player co-op mode or compete against each other in PvP mini-games.
Being able to play a new 2D Sonic game so soon after the recent Sonic Frontiers: The Final Horizon DLC is a delight for fans of the Blue Blur. Prior to its launch earlier this week, Sonic Superstars offered a host of pre-order bonuses for fans, including exclusive LEGO character skins for Eggman and Sonic's friends and an alternative Sonic skin based on one of Sega's early concepts for the iconic platforming hero. However, it has now been reported that the cel-shaded versions of Sonic and his allies, which were initially available on the Steam version of Sonic Superstars, have seemingly vanished.
Shortly after the release of Sonic Superstars, a Twitter user named Axanery shared a brief clip featuring a cel-shaded Sonic running through the Speed Jungle Zone, drawing inspiration from IDW's Sonic the Hedgehog comics. This post was followed by screenshots of similar appearances for Tails, Knuckles, and Amy, which many players found to be more visually appealing than the standard character models. However, these special skins disappeared from Steam shortly after the game launched, although fans report that the Steam storefront still displays their page.
Naturally, speculation has arisen regarding why these special character skins for Sonic Superstars are no longer downloadable. Some players who managed to obtain the skins before they were removed have reported experiencing technical issues, such as their character turning black during specific actions, suggesting that Sega may be working to fix them. Others have noted that Amazon lists a Comic Book Skin Pack for the console versions of Sonic Superstars, implying that the problem may only affect the game's PC version.
Players are unable to download the special comic-based character skins in the PC version of Sonic Superstars, much to the disappointment of those wanting to enhance their gameplay with Sonic's cel-shaded appearance. However, the LEGO Sonic skin mentioned earlier is available for free to all users, while interested gamers will have to pay for the Rabbit Sonic, Mecha Sonic, and Modern Amy skins.
Sonic Superstars can be played on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
