Donald Glover and Maya Erskine are set to star in a television adaptation of the 2005 film Mr. and Mrs. Smith, replacing the original "Brangelina" duo. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie famously played the married spy couple in the original movie, showcasing incredible on-screen chemistry that led to their real-life romance. (Pitt was still married to Jennifer Aniston at the time of their meeting.)
Pitt and Jolie married in 2014 but divorced in 2016. They share six children: Maddox (22), Pax (20), Zahara (18), Shiloh (17), and twins Vivienne and Knox (15). Although declared legally single in 2019, they continued to fight for custody of their younger children.
In contrast, Glover and Erskine are keeping the drama on the screen.

Glover and Francesca Sloane, the creators of the FX comedy-drama series Atlanta, have also collaborated on the creation, writing, and production of Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

In a November 2023 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Glover expressed that the upcoming series offers a distinct emotional experience compared to the original movie. He confessed that he initially struggled to comprehend Mr. and Mrs. Smith and aims for the show to delve deeper into the complexities of marriage.
"Why do people still bother getting married? So many end in divorce – what’s the point?” Glover questioned. “Let’s create a show about relationships, but with a focus on the real essence of marriage, trust, teamwork, loneliness, and other relevant themes. I wanted it to resonate with people today because despite abundance, why do we still feel lonely?”
Although not a devoted fan of the 2005 movie, Glover recognized the high expectations for the new show.
“I just know how much people love the other one. So, if everybody’s like, ‘Eh,’ we didn’t do a good job,” he said. “I hope some people are like, ‘This is better than the original,’ and some people are like, ‘This is far worse.’”

The movie "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" features a married couple who are unaware that they are both spies working for competing agencies. The plot unfolds as they are assigned to assassinate one another. The TV adaptation follows two strangers, Glover and Erskine, who join a secretive spy agency and discover they must assume the roles of a married couple.
Is There a Trailer for ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’?
The trailer for the Prime Video series "Maya Erskine, Donald Glover David Lee" was released in December 2023, featuring an action-packed teaser with Erskine and Glover fleeing from explosions, driving a getaway car, and riding in a helicopter while bruised and bloody. Additionally, the duo is seen lying to their couple’s therapist, played by Paulson, about their occupations and engaging in small talk over coffee.
“I should be clear, I’m not in this for the romance,” Erskine tells Glover in the clip.
Why Did Phoebe Waller-Bridge Leave ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’?

Waller-Bridge had initially been cast to play Mrs. Smith and act as an executive producer, but ultimately left the project due to creative variances.
"I devoted six months of my full heart and mind to that show and genuinely cared for it - I still do," the star of Fleabag shared with Vanity Fair in June 2023. "I'm confident it's going to be fantastic. But there comes a time when you have to know when to step away. You don't want to hinder a vision. Collaborating creatively is like a marriage, and some marriages just don't work out."
Erskine stepped into the role in Waller-Bridge’s place. In November 2023, she told EW that she wanted to play up the differences between herself and Jolie.
