Highlights

Players of Baldur's Gate 3 can use an elaborate trick with Owlbears to deal a ridiculous amount of damage, showcasing the game's creative combat system.

By cleverly stacking boxes, players have the ability to transform into an Owlbear and utilize the powerful Elixir of the Colossus. By combining these elements, players can execute a Crushing Flight leap that inflicts a staggering 821 points of Bludgeoning damage. This maneuver not only emphasizes the strategic value of having the high ground during battles and the extraordinary potential for devastating assaults, but also sheds light on the diverse applications of fall damage in non-combat scenarios within the game.

A Baldur's Gate 3 player recently shared a clever trick on social media that deals an incredible amount of damage using Owlbears. This showcases the boundless creativity enabled by the game's combat system.

Warning! There are minor gameplay spoilers for Baldur's Gate 3 ahead. In the game, players have the opportunity to rescue an Owlbear cub early on. However, the Owlbears used in combat are actually Druids who have the ability to transform into various menacing creatures through the use of Wild Shape. This ability is exclusive to custom player characters, specific companions of the Druid class, and recruited generic Druids conversing with Withers at the camp.

After experimenting with a Druid protagonist, Twitch streamer Ellohime discovered a method to drastically increase his character's damage output in her Owlbear form. The process involves climbing a stack of boxes to gain a high vantage point, transforming into an Owlbear using Wild Shape, and then consuming the Elixir of the Colossus to further increase in size. Utilizing the Crushing Flight class action, the streamer was able to leap onto a nearby acolyte, resulting in the unfortunate individual being flattened. This combination of actions resulted in a staggering 821 points of Bludgeoning damage, surpassing the Baldur's Gate 3 NPC's health by a factor of 30.

Upon reviewing the combat log, it was discovered that the lethal jump was executed from a height of 31.6 meters (103 feet), generating an impact equivalent to over five metric tons or more than 11,000 lbs. In normal circumstances, jumping from such a height in Baldur's Gate 3 would lead to fatal consequences. However, the Crushing Leap skill effectively nullifies fall damage, making it an essential element of this destructive combination.

Since the ability inflicts Bludgeoning damage, it is advisable to use this newly discovered technique against Baldur's Gate 3 enemies who are not resistant to blunt weapon attacks. However, based on the significant amount of damage Ellohime was able to inflict, it is possible that combining the Elixir of the Colossus with Crushing Leap could allow for the defeat of enemies from lower heights when in the Owlbear form. Additionally, stacking crates to create height advantages can be advantageous for non-Druid classes as it improves ranged combat rolls and makes them more difficult to hit.

While this innovative technique highlights the usefulness of gravity in combat, fall damage also has practical applications outside of fighting. This was recently demonstrated through the discovery of a Baldur's Gate 3 trick for opening locked chests without using lockpicks.

Baldur's Gate 3 is available now on PC and launches September 6 on PS5, with an Xbox Series X/S port also in development.
