The Incredible Resilience of Diablo: Rising from the Ashes of a House Fire

Despite the devastation of a house fire, an unexpected twist of fate reveals the ultimate survivor amidst the ashes: Diablo, an ironically untouched video game that defies the flames

2023 looks to be an incredible year for devoted Diablo fans following the monumental success of Diablo 4. Blizzard has officially declared that Diablo 4 has become their fastest-selling game to date, with an astonishing 93 million hours of gameplay recorded since its release on June 1. However, despite this remarkable achievement, it is worth noting that Diablo 2 remains the most acclaimed installment in the series, with countless players considering it their all-time favorite game.

In a surprising twist of fate, a Reddit user named Schenscher shared an image of their copy of Diablo 2 amidst the ruins of their former home. The cause of the devastating fire remains a mystery, but a separate image was also posted, revealing the extensive destruction caused by the incident. Amongst the background clutter of other games in the first image, it was Diablo 2 that stood out the most, adding an ironic touch to an already somber situation.

The survival of video games in a house fire is a rare occurrence, and it brings to mind the well-known story of John Lewis, whose collection of more than 2000 games was tragically lost in a similar incident. The fire, which originated in his kitchen and proved uncontrollable, claimed not only his massive collection but also his cherished childhood favorites, including the elusive Super Mario RPG and Earthbound. With over 2000 games and 30 systems lost in the blaze, the magnitude of the financial investment lost in this unfortunate event is immeasurable.

Other gamers have also experienced the surprising survival of their childhood favorites after a fire. One Reddit user, CaseyWrong, had a similar outcome when their bedroom burned down but their Xbox One managed to withstand the fire and still function. In all of these cases, there is a common thread of initially feeling a sense of loss for what happened to their homes, but eventually finding solace in the fact that life can move forward. Nonetheless, the haunting image of the demon on the cover of Diablo 2 amidst the wreckage will forever be remembered. Diablo 2 can currently be played on PC.
