The villains in Dragon Ball are some of the most memorable aspects of the series. They range from powerful galactic tyrants to destructive bio-androids, each with their own motives. While some villains may have simple goals, their unique personalities make them stand out. Even characters like Kid Buu, who may seem one-dimensional, have left a lasting impact on fans, showcasing the iconic status of Dragon Ball's villains.
Some of the most beloved villains in Dragon Ball actually exist outside of the series' official canon. Examples include the original version of Broly, Omega Shenron, Janemba, and Bojack. However, one villain that stands out above the rest is Cooler, Frieza's older brother known for his brash and arrogant demeanor. Cooler was so popular that he starred in two Z movies and became a part of Super Dragon Ball Heroes. It's time to delve into who Cooler is and why he deserves to be included in the official series!
Who Is Cooler?
cooler-dbz - Who Is Cooler?
First Appearance | Dragon Ball Z: Cooler's Revenge |
---|---|
Debut Date | July 20, 1991 |
Race | Frost Demon |
Cooler was introduced in a non-canon movie following the Namek Saga. He is King Cold's eldest son and Frieza's older brother. Known for his cruelty, Cooler led the Cooler Division in his father's army. He was a skilled warrior who achieved a transformation beyond his race's final form before any other family member.
Cooler, much like his younger brother Frieza, is known for his cold and calculating ways of dealing with things. However, unlike Frieza, Cooler does not let his ego get in the way and never underestimates his opponents. Despite being part of the Frieza Force, he keeps his distance from his family and harbors a strong dislike and animosity towards his brother. In fact, Cooler even admitted to Goku that if he had not killed Frieza at the end of the Namek Saga, Cooler would have likely been the one to do it.
"I am the supreme master of this universe!" Cooler declares. "I am the great destroyer, the taker of life! It is my will that this planet, and everyone on it, be annihilated!"
Cooler's intense hatred towards Frieza caused him to act out of pride, resulting in Goku's escape from Planet Vegeta. This eventually led to the downfall of Cooler's own race and family. He witnessed Frieza's destruction of the Saiyan homeworld and saw Goku being sent away on a shuttle. Instead of allowing his men to destroy the shuttle, Cooler instructed them to let it escape.
Cooler's decision was driven by his desire to show Frieza that it was his own hesitation and compassion that prevented the immediate annihilation of the Saiyan race. However, ironically, Cooler's pride and impulsiveness mirrored Frieza's downfall. By letting Goku go, Cooler inadvertently sealed his own fate and that of his brother, falling victim to Goku's Super Saiyan power.
Cooler's forms and abilities:
Cooler, unlike Frieza, is only shown in his final form, skipping the first three forms. Visually, he bears a striking resemblance to Frieza but with a color palette switch - Cooler has purple skin instead of white. Additionally, Cooler towers over Frieza in height, standing closer to Goku's stature. In terms of fighting style, Cooler mirrors Frieza closely, utilizing almost identical moves to his brother.
Cooler's new form surpasses the final transformation of the Frost Demon race, making him stronger than Frieza when he fought Super Saiyan Goku. He effortlessly withstands Goku's Kamehameha attack without being hurt. Although he is eventually defeated by Super Saiyan Goku, Cooler proves to be much more powerful than his brother.
Why Cooler Should Be Canon
cooler-vs-goku - Why Cooler Needs To Be Made Canon
Cooler, a villain in Dragon Ball, stands out for his unique and memorable character. While he shares the common goal of destroying the Saiyans and Earth like other villains, his complex relationship with Frieza and his personal flaws make him a relatable and intriguing character.
As a result, Cooler's motivations stem largely from feeling overshadowed by Frieza, which adds complexity to his character. The introduction of another powerful Frost Demon like Frieza would be interesting to see in terms of power dynamics.
Even though I have the power to easily defeat these weaklings, I'll let it slide this time. Remember, Uncle Cooler is always generous!
Possible Addition of Cooler to Dragon Ball Super
In Dragon Ball Super, characters like Gogeta, Broly, and Goku's parents have been brought into the series, making them part of the official canon. Cooler, the brother of Frieza, could also be introduced in a similar way. It could be revealed that Cooler has been in another galaxy for decades, becoming even stronger with a 'Black Cooler' transformation. If he were to ally himself with his brother Frieza, it would add more depth to the story and give the Z-Fighters a challenging battle against the powerful brothers.
golden-frieza-and-cooler - He could also just be introduced as a version of Frieza from another universe where everything pretty much turns out the same way, but it is Cooler instead of Frieza in that universe
In another universe, there exists a version of Frieza known as Cooler. Despite the similarities, Cooler is the one ruling the universe instead. What's interesting is that Cooler may surprise fans by appearing as a more heroic character who aids the heroes in defeating the tyrant of Universe 7 once and for all.
Dragon Ball can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
