Games have various approaches to addressing mental health, ranging from incorporating it into the narrative to using gaming as a way to raise money for mental well-being charities. In online games like Final Fantasy 14, interactive roleplaying serves as a creative outlet for processing emotions.
Roleplaying is an intriguing combination of improvisational acting, creative writing, and game design, allowing for a diverse range of artistic expressions. By establishing rules, following norms, embracing principles like "yes-and," and participating in collaborative storytelling, roleplaying becomes an immersive and emotionally fulfilling experience. Despite being a socially engaging activity, it often takes place in isolation, presenting a unique challenge for individuals dealing with social anxiety, a common issue among Final Fantasy 14 players.
The Kweh, a new resource for Final Fantasy 14 roleplayers, embarked on a six-month interview project to document the experiences of roleplayers with social anxiety. The goal of this project was to identify common themes and share experiences in order to support those who struggle with panic during roleplay. Legaia, the creator of The Kweh, recently discussed the project with Our website, and the results were published in mid-October.
"I have a strong desire to create things that can be valuable to others. Even if it only helps one person, that is sufficient for me. I remember someone expressing admiration for The Kweh's foundational RP guide, but hesitated to try it due to their anxiety. ... I conducted interviews with 80 individuals from different regions to ensure that their voices were heard, and to create a resource that incorporates perspectives from around the world ... This project is a combination of my personal struggle with anxiety, people seeking my assistance and advice, and my passion for creating a platform where others can contribute."
The social anxiety project compiled a range of useful tips to address various concerns. This includes dealing with ghosting, establishing clear expectations with roleplaying partners, maintaining a distinction between oneself and the character, ensuring general online safety, providing guidance for staff overseeing roleplaying venues and events, and addressing other anxiety issues prevalent in online games. As part of this project, Legaia shared some key data visualizations that formed the core of the published findings. This involved a substantial effort, spanning hundreds of hours, to distill the insights of the community into a user-friendly website.
One notable discovery was the impact of heavy themes on roleplay writers. While it is not uncommon for emotionally intense roleplays to resonate with them, many of the individuals interviewed by Legaia expressed concern that the subject matter of a specific roleplay may negatively affect their roleplay partners. They were anxious and worried about the influence their writing could have on others. Although he had not engaged in such themes in his own roleplay, Legaia had not anticipated the prevalence of this concern but was not surprised by it either. He described it as a genuine concern that Final Fantasy 14 roleplayers have for each other's well-being.
Engaging in a project like this may seem unconventional, requiring hundreds of hours and half a year's time, but Legaia was driven by his personal experiences. Specifically, it was the memory of a supportive friend who passed away several years ago that motivated him. He dedicated the section of The Kweh to honor her.
She was always there for me, ready to lend a helping hand during moments of panic and genuinely listen to my thoughts. She played the role of a second mother in my life, and I cannot express enough how grateful I am to have had someone like her by my side. She possessed an incredible personality, and I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have had her presence in my life. Individuals like her are rare to come by, as we don't always have a hero to support and assist us. Ever since she passed away, I have made it my mission to carry on her acts of kindness towards others, doing my best to help those who may need it.
The Kweh, the social anxiety project, focused primarily on aiding new roleplayers in navigating Final Fantasy 14's roleplaying community. Leagaia characterized it as a vibrant and lively community, with large-scale events organized by the community, such as the annual summer music festival, Mogstock.
The Kweh serves as a comprehensive guide to help new roleplayers navigate the social norms within various Final Fantasy 14 roleplaying communities. It explains the differences between servers and datacenters, as well as the variations in roleplaying practices between English-speaking and Japanese-speaking communities. Initially created as a lighthearted profile of roleplaying venues, the site evolved into a valuable resource in March 2023. Legaia, the driving force behind The Kweh, is committed to dedicating long-term energy to support this thriving community.
Describing her passion for The Kweh, Legaia shares, "It is an outlet for my frustrations and a way to channel all of my creativity and skills into one project. It also allows the essence of who I am to live on. Recognizing this, I persevered to complete the recent release, as stopping was out of the question. I view roleplaying as a form of community-driven content that can be truly enjoyable. My aim is to make it more accessible and provide players with everything they need to give it a try. Simple as that."
Applying the principles of The Kweh across different languages is the next goal for Legaia. He is currently collaborating with Yabi Yabi, another content creator, on a project that explores the differences between datacenters. However, Legaia acknowledges that the next major interview project may take some time. Conducting over 100 interviews in the past year has required a significant amount of time and energy, often resulting in missed meetings at his workplace.
Despite any challenges he may face, the author values his experience and has no desire to exchange it. He is eager to explore his interests and curiosity further in the future. Before speaking with Our website, he engaged in a conversation with a fellow player of Final Fantasy 14 at a whiskey bar in Shinjuku, Tokyo. The topics discussed included savage raiding, roleplaying, the economy of the marketboard, housing, and more. The other player expressed excitement for the opportunity to unite and fight alongside each other in Eorzea.

As a Gen Z fan, I am deeply interested in the impact of social anxiety on the Final Fantasy 14 RP community. The Kweh's recent survey provides valuable insights into the challenges faced by roleplayers in this immersive gaming community. It is evident that social anxiety is a prevalent issue among Final Fantasy 14 players, and it significantly affects their roleplaying experiences.
The combination of improvisational acting, creative writing, and game design in roleplaying creates a unique and emotionally fulfilling experience. However, the socially engaging nature of roleplaying can be daunting for individuals with social anxiety. The fear of being judged or scrutinized by others can hinder their ability to fully immerse themselves in the game and express their creativity. This can lead to feelings of isolation and a diminished sense of enjoyment.
