The team behind The Irregular at Magic High School ("Mahōka Kōkō no Rettōsei" or just "Mahōka" in Japanese) has announced a new anime series sequel set to release in 2024. The announcement was made during the Dengeki Bunko 30th Anniversary event held in Japan last weekend. The upcoming season was revealed through an exciting trailer and captivating key visual. This third season of The Irregular at Magic High School will debut approximately three years after the conclusion of its second season, which aired in the Fall of 2020.
The Irregular at Magic High School is set in the late 21st century, where science has made significant advancements, enabling the realization of mythical concepts such as magic and sorcery. In this era, magic is taught as a technical skill at the esteemed First High School, where students are divided into two groups: "Blooms" and "Weeds." The Blooms consist of those who scored high on their entrance exams, while the Weeds are comprised of those who did not perform as well.
Those in the First Course are the privileged Blooms, while the Second Course is reserved for the Weeds. Unfortunately, the Weeds are treated as inferior by their fellow students. Upon their arrival, siblings Miyuki and Tatsuya Shiba find themselves divided by these categories, with Tatsuya labeled as a "Weed" due to his lackluster exam performance. However, despite his low test scores and inability to use magic, Tatsuya possesses an exceptional technical understanding of its applications and displays impressive combat abilities, earning him the title of "the irregular at magic high school."
The Irregular at Magic High School anime is an adaptation of the manga, which itself is based on the novel written by Tsutomu Satou. Initially published on the self-publishing site Narou from October 2008 to March 2011, the series was later picked up by ASCII Media Works' Dengeki Bunko imprint in July 2011. The light novel ran for 32 volumes until concluding in September 2020, featuring illustrations by Kana Ishida. Additionally, the manga adaptation of The Irregular at Magic High School was serialized in the Dengeki Daioh magazine from April 2012 to June 2020 and included illustrations by Yu Mori.
The first season of The Irregular at Magic High School anime was produced by Madhouse and aired from April to September 2014, consisting of 24 episodes. Six years later, the second season titled The Irregular at Magic High School: Visitor Arc was released. This season, comprising of 13 episodes, had some visual changes as the studio shifted from Madhouse to 8bit. The change in studio has continued since then, with 8bit producing subsequent installments, including a film set after the siblings' first year at First High in 2017. Additionally, an anime adaptation of the spin-off series featuring Miyuki was released in Summer 2021, and a prequel OVA was released in December 2021.
For the upcoming season of The Irregular at Magic High School, Jimmy Stone, a returning staff member who has previously worked on the series in various capacities including animation director, will serve as the director. Taku Iwasaki will return to compose the music, and it is expected that the previous cast members will also make a comeback.
