Grammer discusses the impact of Niles' absence on the Frasier reboot and how it will influence the titular character. Despite being asked to return for the Paramount+ show, Pierce chose not to reprise his role as Niles Crane, citing his reluctance to redo his exceptional portrayal. This decision is not surprising, as Pierce has previously expressed his opposition to reviving the highly acclaimed series. Niles' absence will play a significant role in the Frasier revival, considering his integral contribution to the original show. In a recent interview with The Independent, Grammer reveals that Frasier will have to make certain changes due to his younger brother's circumstances.
Frasier is set to embark on a journey of discovering true friendship, a concept that has never been explored in his character before. In the absence of David Hyde Pierce's Niles, who used to be his trusted companion, the idea of finding a great friend has become incredibly appealing and fresh for Frasier. This opens up a whole new world for him. The role of this friend is portrayed by Nicholas Lyndhurst, an esteemed actor from the UK who is widely regarded as one of the best in the industry. Personally, he has also become a dear and cherished friend of mine.
Can Niles Still Appear In The Frasier Revival?
Amid skepticism about not including any series regulars from the Seatte-based series as mainstays, Grammer has been generating excitement for the upcoming show's new cast. While Bebe Neuwirth and Roz Gilpin are set to return, they will only appear as guest stars. The absence of Pierce's Niles, who was a standout character in the original series, is particularly notable. Despite this, Grammer confidently claims that the Frasier revival may surpass its predecessor in terms of humor.
The task of assembling a new ensemble around Frasier is a challenging one, but Grammer appears to have successfully found the right individuals for the job. While there is still hope for surprise appearances by Pierce's Niles and Jane Leeves' Daphne, it is unlikely that they will become regular cast members. Nevertheless, even a cameo from them would be enough to generate excitement among viewers. However, it is important for the Frasier revival to acknowledge and reference Frasier's brother, particularly in light of Martin's passing, as it would not make sense narratively otherwise.
At present, there are no indications of plans to include Niles, meaning he will likely be absent in the first season of the Frasier reboot. If the show is renewed for additional seasons and receives a positive response from the audience, Pierce may be persuaded to finally join the project. In the meantime, as Frasier embarks on his fourth act in Boston, he will have to rely on his new family and friends.
