The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, which powers several flagship Android smartphones released in 2023, has an overclocked version exclusively made for Samsung smartphones. However, it seems that this Samsung-exclusive chip may soon become available for other companies as well.
Nubia, a Chinese smartphone manufacturer and the owner of the gaming smartphone brand Redmagic, has released a teaser confirming that their upcoming phone, the Redmagic 8S Pro, will be equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 "Leading Version." This variant has the same clock speed as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy, which powers Samsung's Galaxy S23 range of smartphones. Therefore, it can be assumed that they both use the exact same silicon.
It is uncertain if Qualcomm will use the branding "Leading Version" for this chip in other markets, as this teaser is specifically targeting the Chinese market. It is possible that the chip will be launched as the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 2 instead. However, this decision is not unexpected.
Samsung probably entered into an agreement with Qualcomm, providing exclusivity to the Korean company for a few months, without disrupting Qualcomm's regular release schedule. This is not surprising, considering Qualcomm has been releasing overclocked "plus" versions of its chips as mid-cycle updates for many years.
We’ll have to see if more smartphones pop up with this chip, and whether any of them are headed towards the US market.
