The Super Mario franchise is globally renowned and has become synonymous with Nintendo. Its characters have become iconic mascots for the company since their inception. Over the years, these characters have featured in a wide range of game genres, and it's rare for a Nintendo Direct to pass without a mention of one or more Super Mario games. The most recent Nintendo Direct continued this trend, with almost every major Mario character having a game in the pipeline. However, one important side character seems to have been overlooked in all the excitement.
In the next few years, fans can expect an abundance of Mario content. Super Mario RPG and Super Mario Bros. Wonder will showcase Mario's adventures, Luigi will star in a remastered version of Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon, Wario is set to receive a new WarioWare game, and even Princess Peach will have her own game in 2024. While it's thrilling to see these beloved characters take the spotlight, there's a noticeable absence from this lineup - Princess Daisy. It is imperative to address this exclusion and give Princess Daisy the recognition she deserves.
A Princess Daisy Game is Long Overdue
Since her first appearance in Super Mario Land in 1989, Princess Daisy has established herself as an integral part of the Mario franchise. Although not as iconic as Princess Peach, she has made multiple appearances as a playable side character and has become a recurring character in Mario sports games since 2000's Mario Tennis. Additionally, Daisy has been a staple in the Mario Party roster since her debut in Mario Party 3, a regular in the Mario Kart series since Double Dash, and has appeared in every installment of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. After years of being a major side character, she will finally be making her playable debut in a mainline Super Mario Bros. game with the highly anticipated Super Mario Bros. Wonder.
Princess Daisy, a longstanding member of the main Mario cast, has yet to receive her own game, unlike her counterparts Luigi and Princess Peach. Despite her appearances in various Mario games, Princess Daisy remains one of the few recurring characters who has not been given the opportunity to have her own storyline. In addition, she was notably excluded from The Super Mario Bros. Movie and has had limited focus on her character since her initial debut.
Similar to Waluigi, Nintendo seems to treat Princess Daisy as a neglected character within the franchise. Both characters have been part of the Mario series for a significant period of time, yet they are frequently overlooked in favor of other more prominent characters. Although Princess Daisy and Waluigi may not have achieved the same level of popularity as the main characters, Nintendo has yet to provide them with a platform to potentially gain more recognition and fan support.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder, the upcoming game for Nintendo Switch, is set to release on October 20, 2023.
