WARNING: Contains SPOILERS for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Season 2 finale.
Summary
Martin Quinn makes his first appearance as Scotty, the Chief Engineer, in the season 2 finale of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. It remains unclear whether Martin Quinn's portrayal of Scotty will continue in season 3, but there is a possibility that he could be prepared to take over as Commander Pelia's replacement before Captain Kirk assumes control.
In the season 2 finale of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Martin Quinn makes history as the first Scottish actor to portray the iconic character of Scotty. Known for his expertise in Gorn technology, Scotty's knowledge may hold the key to resolving the cliffhanger. In this episode titled "Hegemony," Captain Christopher Pike saves Scotty from the Gorn-infested planet, Parnassus Beta, granting him his first adventure aboard the USS Enterprise.
5 Scotty In Star Trek: The Original Series, Movies & TNG
The future status of Martin Quinn's Scotty in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 remains uncertain. There are indications that he may be groomed to eventually replace Commander Pelia (Carol Kane) before Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) takes command of the USS Enterprise. Martin Quinn, the first Scottish actor to portray Starfleet's iconic Scotsman, joins an exclusive league of only three other actors who have played the character in its various versions throughout Star Trek's extensive history.
James Doohan portrayed the popular character Scotty in Star Trek: The Original Series for three seasons, spanning from 1966 to '69. As the chief engineer on board the USS Enterprise, Scotty played a vital role in ensuring the smooth functioning of the ship's engines. In the absence of Captain Kirk and Spock, Scotty would often take charge of the Enterprise or lead away missions. His deep affection for the starship was evident when he valiantly defended its honor during a lively altercation with a Klingon in the beloved Star Trek: TOS episode, "The Trouble with Tribbles".
After the Enterprise was decommissioned, Scotty received a promotion to Captain during the momentous transwarp experiment. Despite serving on the USS Excelsior, Scotty never found the same level of fulfillment as he did on the Enterprise. However, fortune (or misfortune) smiled upon Scotty when he was assigned to the USS Enterprise-A, a ship plagued by numerous flaws that kept him constantly occupied until its decommissioning. Additionally, Scotty had the opportunity to visit both the Enterprise-B and Enterprise-D, all thanks to a life-saving transporter maneuver that put him in stasis until the mid 2300s.
4 Scotty In J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek
In J.J. Abrams' Star Trek movies, Simon Pegg portrayed Scotty, a character who brought comedic elements to the franchise and was often accompanied by an alien sidekick. Along with his typical role, Scotty also embarked on a mission to uncover Section 31's illicit activities in Star Trek Into Darkness. In Star Trek Beyond, Scotty played a crucial role in reviving the outdated USS Franklin to rescue the USS Yorktown. Throughout the Kelvin Timeline movies, Scotty and Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) maintained the same close friendship as their counterparts in the Prime Timeline.
Interestingly, Kirk and Scotty encountered the Prime Timeline Spock (Leonard Nimoy), who generously shared with them the secrets of Prime Scotty's revolutionary transwarp beaming technology. Scotty had been stranded on the desolate ice planet Delta Vega as a punishment for allegedly misplacing Admiral Archer's esteemed beagle. While this does not entirely align with the Star Trek: Enterprise timeline, it amusingly creates the notion of Montgomery Scott meeting Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula) and causing frustration for the renowned Starfleet figure.
3 Hologram Scotty In Star Trek: Prodigy
Upon discovering the holodeck aboard the USS Protostar in Star Trek: Prodigy, Dal R'El (portrayed by Brett Gray) eagerly embarked on the daunting Kobayashi Maru simulation. Determined to tackle the challenge, Dal assembled a crew of renowned Star Trek icons, including a holographic projection of Montgomery Scott. This lifelike representation of Scotty, based on his appearance in the Star Trek: The Original Series movies, featured the unmistakable voice of James Doohan from previously recorded dialogue. This delightful homage paid tribute to the esteemed Starfleet legends of previous generations, adding an extra layer of nostalgia to the youth-driven Star Trek series.
2 Scotty (Voice) In Strange New Worlds Season 1 Finale
Scotty's return to Star Trek: Strange New Worlds almost happened a year earlier in the season 1 finale. In an alternate timeline created by Pike's efforts to change his tragic future, Scotty served aboard the USS Enterprise in "A Quality of Mercy". Although Scotty did not make an on-screen appearance, an unnamed actor provided his voice in a brief dialogue as Spock checked in with the Chief Engineer during their confrontation with the Romulans. After Pike returned to his original time, he continued to follow Kirk's career, but didn't show much interest in Mr. Scott.
1 Scotty In Strange New Worlds Season 2 Finale
In the season 2 finale of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Pike's away team discovers the survivors of the Gorn Hegemony's attack. Among them is Lt. Montgomery Scott (Martin Quinn), the sole survivor of the USS Stardiver, which was destroyed during the events at Parnassus Beta. With his cleverness and engineering skills, Scotty managed to create traps and gain valuable knowledge about the Gorn's strengths and weaknesses. He also developed a Gorn transponder that allows him to hide from their sensors, potentially holding the solution to the season 2 cliffhanger for the Enterprise.
Scotty actor Martin Quinn is making history as the first Scottish actor to portray the iconic Star Trek character in the franchise's 57-year existence. Hailing from Paisley, just a short train ride from Linlithgow, the birthplace of Scotty, Quinn's portrayal is highly anticipated. While it remains uncertain if Martin Quinn's Scotty will become a regular or recurring character in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3, the signs are promising. In the season 3 premiere, he will play a crucial role alongside Commander Pelia as they endeavor to adapt his Gorn technology for the Enterprise and save the day.
