Article Overview
Pavel Chekov played multiple roles throughout his Starfleet career, including navigator, tactical officer, science officer, and first officer.
Chekov's scientific expertise and exceptional navigation skills made him an invaluable member of the USS Enterprise crew. Renowned by fans of both the original series and the reboot movies, Chekov's character left a lasting impression. His enduring legacy even extended to the future, as his descendant eventually became the President of the United Federation of Planets in Star Trek: Picard.
Pavel Chekov, portrayed by Walter Koenig, had a versatile career in Starfleet, serving various roles in both Star Trek: The Original Series and J.J. Abrams' Star Trek movies. While Chekov was not the only one to take on multiple tasks - Sulu initially began in science before becoming a skilled pilot - Chekov stood out as the most prolific. Initially joining TOS in season 2 to temporarily replace George Takei, who was filming The Green Berets at the time, Koenig's presence proved to be a valuable asset to the Star Trek series even after Takei's return.
Throughout his time on Star Trek: The Original Series, Chekov became a beloved member of the crew, contributing to numerous iconic moments. From the harrowing experience of the Ceti eel insertion in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan to the comedic search for "nuclear wessels" in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Walter Koenig's portrayal of Chekov resonated with fans and solidified his character's place in the Star Trek universe. This affection for Chekov continued when the talented Anton Yelchin took on the role in the J.J. Abrams' Star Trek movies, where he skillfully assumed various responsibilities aboard the USS Enterprise.
6. Navigator On The USS Enterprise
Star Trek: The Original Series & J.J. Abrams' Star Trek Movies
Ensign Pavel Chekov served on the USS Enterprise prior to Captain Kirk's encounter with Khan in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. During the time between "Space Seed" and Chekov's first appearance in Star Trek: The Original Series season 2, he was assigned as the navigator. Chekov and Sulu formed a friendship while working together at the helm of the Enterprise.
In the Kelvin Timeline, Chekov held the same role on the Enterprise under Captain Pike and was recognized as a brilliant young talent. This allowed him to excel in various capacities during his Starfleet career. In Star Trek (2009), the Kelvin Chekov used his navigational skills to keep the Enterprise concealed from the Romulan antagonist, Nero. Even after James T. Kirk became the permanent captain, Chekov remained as the navigator on the Enterprise.
5. Spock's Deputy Science Officer
Star Trek: The Original Series & Star Trek III: The Search For Spock
Sometimes, Lt. Commander Spock (Leonard Nimoy) would need a replacement at the science station on the bridge of the Enterprise, and that's when Chekov would step in. In the Star Trek: The Original Series episode "Who Mourns For Adonais?", Chekov showcased his extensive knowledge of various species that resembled the alien claiming to be Apollo. Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy was so impressed with Chekov's scientific expertise that he jokingly suggested that "Spock's contaminating the boy." Later, in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, Chekov filled in for Spock once again as they embarked on a rescue mission to retrieve their fallen comrade from the Genesis planet.
4. Tactical & Security Officer Of The USS Enterprise
Star Trek: The Motion Picture
3. First Officer Of The USS Reliant
Star Trek had to find a replacement for Chekov as the navigator of the USS Enterprise in Star Trek: The Animated Series due to budget constraints that made it impossible to bring back Walter Koenig. However, Chekov returned in Star Trek: The Motion Picture, although in a different role. As a Lieutenant, Chekov added to his responsibilities on the bridge by serving as both the security and tactical officer under the command of Captain Will Decker (Stephen Collins) and later Admiral James T. Kirk (William Shatner) during the V'Ger crisis. The transition from navigation to tactical duty was logical since launching photon torpedoes requires the same type of precise calculations as navigating a starship.
Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan
Following the resolution of the V'Ger Crisis, Commander Chekov was elevated in rank and assumed the position of first officer aboard the USS Reliant, under the leadership of Captain Clark Terrell (Paul Winfield). The Reliant's mission involved locating a suitable testing ground for the revolutionary Genesis Device in the Star Trek universe. However, their expedition took an unforeseen turn when they mistakenly explored what they believed to be Ceti Alpha VI. To their dismay, this seemingly desolate planet turned out to be Ceti Alpha V, the clandestine refuge of Khan Noonien Singh and his loyal followers. Through the assistance of a Ceti eel, Khan manipulated Chekov and Terrell, using the USS Reliant as bait to engage in a climactic final confrontation with Captain Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.
2. Chief Engineer Of The USS Enterprise
Star Trek Into Darkness
Throughout both timelines, the bond between Scotty and the USS Enterprise remains unbreakable, as the engineer's affection for the Federation flagship is unwavering. However, Star Trek Into Darkness brings a slight shift in this relationship as Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott (Simon Pegg) decides to part ways with the Enterprise out of protest. During this time, Scotty delves into an investigation at the spacedock where the USS Vengeance is stationed. In his absence, it is left to Chekov to manually bring the Enterprise out of warp and then fix the deliberately damaged warp core. The intense pressure and challenges faced in the engineering department rightly fuel Chekov's anxiety about donning a red shirt. Consequently, his relief is palpable when Scotty finally returns, allowing Chekov to reclaim his rightful place at the navigator's chair.
1. President Of The United Federation Of Planets
Star Trek: Picard Season 3, Episode 10, "The Last Generation"
Although not the original Mr. Chekov, a descendant of Pavel Chekov rose to the esteemed position of President of the United Federation of Planets. In the finale of Star Trek: Picard, President Anton Chekov (played by Walter Koenig) was heard issuing a warning to all ships, advising against approaching Earth amidst an attack by the Borg. This appearance of Anton Chekov in Picard served as a heartfelt tribute to both the profound impact of Walter Koenig's portrayal and the dearly missed actor Anton Yelchin, who brilliantly took on the role of the iconic character from Star Trek: The Original Series.
All of Star Trek is available to stream on Paramount+.
