The God of War duology focuses on personal stakes rather than large-scale boss battles like the original series, with Kratos protecting his son against Norse gods.
There are rumors indicating that a potential spin-off for God of War Ragnarok, following the format of Uncharted: Lost Legacy and Spider-Man: Miles Morales, might be under development.
In this hypothetical spin-off, Atreus could confront Sindri, who holds deep bitterness towards both him and Kratos, resulting in a significantly impactful final battle.
The mythology-infused boss battles have always been a major allure of the God of War franchise. In the original series, players were captivated by the grandiose showdowns against formidable gods like Poseidon, Ares, and Zeus himself. These battles took place in vast arenas, pitting the player against adversaries many times their size. Although the recent God of War duology has scaled down the size of these encounters, the emotional stakes remain higher than ever.
While the boss battles in the 2018 installment of God of War may not be the most extravagant, they undoubtedly make up for it with a deeply personal touch. Kratos must defend his son Atreus from a barrage of Norse gods, including Baldur and Thor's sons Modi and Magni. These personal stakes are set to escalate further in God of War Ragnarok, as Kratos goes head-to-head against Thor, Heimdall, and eventually the formidable Odin. This trend is expected to continue, and with whispers of a half-sequel on the horizon, an even more thrilling high-stakes encounter awaits.
A God of War Ragnarok Half-Sequel Could End with an Atreus Vs. Sindri Boss Fight
Fans have long speculated about the possibility of a God of War Ragnarok sequel ever since the game's release in November of last year. Instead of providing a clear conclusion, Ragnarok leaves several unresolved plot threads, leading fans to believe that a sequel or spin-off was imminent. According to a new rumor started by leaker ViewerAnon, the next installment in the God of War franchise may take the form of a half-sequel, similar to games like Uncharted: Lost Legacy and Spider-Man: Miles Morales.
While this rumor should be approached with caution, it would make sense for God of War to follow this path, allowing Santa Monica to focus on their next major project while still delivering a smaller-scale half-sequel to keep fans satisfied. Among the various possibilities for a God of War Ragnarok half-sequel, a game centered around Atreus and his search for the remaining Giants appears to be the most obvious and likely choice.
PlayStation's previous half-sequels, like God of War, have typically introduced new enemies while also resurrecting some from the previous installment. In the case of a God of War Atreus-led half-sequel, this would mean the return of dark elves, draugr, and potentially mini-bosses such as trolls and Dreki. However, for a God of War Ragnarok half-sequel, a formidable antagonist would be necessary for Atreus to overcome. Luckily, there is already a perfect candidate for this role.
In the later stages of God of War Ragnarok, Brok is killed by Odin, who had disguised himself as the Giant Tyr. Blaming Atreus for unwittingly leading Odin to their location, Brok's brother Sindri harbors a deep resentment towards the young boy. Although Sindri aids in the fight against Ragnarok, it is evident that he holds no forgiveness for Atreus or Kratos. This is manifested in his act of tossing Kratos' hand aside during Brok's funeral and silently teleporting away alone. It appears highly probable that Santa Monica is foreshadowing a potential twist involving Sindri becoming a villain. If anyone were to pursue Atreus during his God of War journey, it would most likely be him. This could result in a surprising but emotionally impactful final boss battle, with Sindri's size making him an ideal opponent for a teenage Atreus. Additionally, his teleportation abilities could make him even more formidable than initially expected.
