Blue Beetle arrives after a turbulent five-year production journey, overshadowed by constant speculation. Jaime Reyes's debut film often gets lost in discussions about the future of the DCU and its role within it. However, Blue Beetle offers a self-contained story that welcomes fans with or without prior knowledge. While this latest DC installment may not revolutionize the franchise, it is laying the foundation for something fresh.
Cast your mind back to the early days of the DCEU, almost a decade ago. DC released a divisive Superman movie and eagerly embraced the task of creating their own version of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Yet, their eagerness resulted in clumsy attempts to promote future projects. Fortunately, Blue Beetle breaks free from this sort of shortsighted greed.
What is Blue Beetle about?
Returning to Palmera City, Texas, 22-year-old university graduate Jaime Reyes is greeted warmly by his family, consisting of his parents Alberto and Rocio, his Nana, and his Uncle Rudy. However, their reunion is overshadowed by a string of unfortunate events. Not only is their family home facing foreclosure, but Alberto's heart attack has also led to the closure of their shop. Despite these challenges, Jaime remains optimistic and relies on his degree from Gotham Law University to secure a well-paying job that could save their beloved home.
To make ends meet, Jaime and his younger sister Milagro take on the role of housekeepers at the extravagant estate of Victoria Kord, a wealthy businesswoman whose corporate conglomerate is responsible for the rapid gentrification of Jaime's neighborhood. While working, Jaime unintentionally overhears a heated argument between Victoria and her niece, Jenny Kord, who vehemently opposes Kord Industry's weapon manufacturing policies. When Jaime courageously intervenes to protect Jenny from Victoria's henchman Carapax, it leads to their dismissal from the job.
Feeling guilty for Jaime's job loss, Jenny attempts to make amends by offering him a position at Kord Industry's main office. Excited about the opportunity, Jaime's excitement is short-lived as circumstances take a turn for the worse. Jenny secretly steals a mysterious and powerful alien artifact known as the Scarab from Kord Industry. As she tries to escape, she unexpectedly encounters Jaime within the building. With no other choice, Jenny hides the Scarab within a fast-food box and urges Jaime to flee with it. Unaware of the consequences, Jaime disregards Jenny's warnings and opens the box. Instantly, the Scarab takes control, transforming Jaime's body and encasing him in a suit of immensely powerful armor.
Catapulted across the city by his newfound abilities, Jaime unintentionally wreaks havoc by destroying cars, slicing a bus in half, and causing terror among the locals. Eventually, he crashes through the roof of his parents' home and discovers that the Scarab is now fused to his spinal column, instilling fear within him. Determined to seek answers and guidance, Jaime sets off on a quest to find Jenny.
Jenny reveals that
How does Blue Beetle end?
is actually a sentient extraterrestrial entity named Khaji Da. Khaji Da has the ability to choose a host, merge with their body, and automatically activate to ensure their survival. Jenny is aware that her father, Ted Kord, had a deep fascination with Khaji Da. Although she has access to his research materials, acquiring a key from Kord Industries becomes necessary. To aid in their mission, Uncle Rudy, a conspiracy theorist and amateur engineer, introduces a device capable of disabling Kord's security technology. Upon successfully obtaining the key, Jaime and Jenny encounter Carapax, who possesses a counterfeit version of the Scarab known as an OMAC. In order to protect Jaime, Khaji Da activates and an intense altercation ensues. As Khaji Da prepares to eliminate Carapax, Jaime refuses, emphasizing his unwillingness to be a killer, and hastily escapes the scene. Together, Jaime, Jenny, and Rudy seek refuge at Jenny's childhood residence, where they come to understand that Jaime has been chosen as the newest Blue Beetle. Removing Khaji Da without jeopardizing Jaime's life proves to be an impossible task, prompting Rudy to encourage his nephew to embrace his role as a hero. Realizing that Victoria Kord will soon target his family, Jaime resolves to employ his newfound powers and save his loved ones. The Reyes family faces a brutal assault from Victoria's private security forces, leading to their capture. In the chaos, a candle topples over and sets the house ablaze. Jaime intervenes just in time, managing to overpower most of the army. However, his heroic efforts are marred by his father experiencing another heart attack. Tragically, Alberto succumbs to his condition as Carapax seizes hold of Jaime. Upon regaining consciousness, Jaime finds himself stranded on an island off the coast of Cuba, where a contraption is siphoning Khaji Da's power to power Victoria's counterfeit versions. Meanwhile, Jenny leads Jaime's family to her father's hidden underground refuge, where they equip themselves with the impressive gadgets created by Ted and board his airship. As they mount a daring offensive, Jenny and Milagro successfully plant explosives on the OMACs. In a serene moment, Jaime encounters his deceased father in the spirit world, receiving a motivating pep talk that instills him with newfound self-confidence. This newfound belief empowers him to break free from the machine's clutches. While Khaji Da's data is successfully downloaded, Jaime still wields its incredible power. Carapax activates his enhanced OMAC suit and launches a fierce assault.
Khaji Da requires time for a reboot, prompting Jaime to flee from Carapax. Suddenly, Jaime's Nana arrives armed with an alien-enhanced minigun and draws upon her hidden revolutionary past to take down soldiers, ultimately saving Jaime. As Khaji Da successfully reboots, Jaime is now able to rescue Milagro. However, Carapax catches up to them and unleashes his remarkably enhanced strength, devastating Jaime. Just as Carapax is about to eliminate the Blue Beetle, Rudy intervenes, diverting his attention. In the chaos, Carapax hurls an explosive, sending Rudy flying. Believing his uncle to be dead, Jaime becomes consumed by anger and defeats Carapax.
In a crucial moment, Jaime is set to exact vengeance upon his nemesis, but Khaji Da intervenes. The Scarab reveals Carapax's memories to Jaime. It becomes evident that the man under the OMAC persona was a former student of the School of the Americas, a militant controlled by imperialist forces to sacrifice his own people for the benefit of Victoria Kord's corporate agenda. Carapax finally comprehends his wrongdoings, forcefully drags Victoria Kord back into the lab engulfed in explosions, and activates his armor's self-destruction. Upon reaching the airship, Jaime is shocked to discover that Uncle Rudy is still alive. Meanwhile, Jenny assumes leadership of Kord Industries, ensuring the safety of the Reyes family's neighborhood. The community rallies together to aid the family in rebuilding, and Jaime initiates a relationship with Jenny.
Does Blue Beetle have a post-credit scene?
There is a mid-credits scene and a post-credits scene in Blue Beetle. The mid-credits scene takes place in Ted Kord's underground base, where the outdated computer hardware suddenly becomes active and Ted Kord declares his existence. In the post-credits scene, a funny moment is shown where a clip from the 70s Mexican superhero parody series El Chapulín Colorado is played. Previously, Rudy used this cartoon to block Kord's security cameras. This scene humorously pokes fun at the audience's expectation to watch through the credits in superhero movies.
Blue Beetle does not have hidden intentions of creating a massive empire or setting up a larger universe. Instead, it presents an authentic and modest superhero origin story, similar to Sam Raimi's Spider-Man. The film tells the story of Jaime, who becomes an established hero and gains a strong understanding of his powers. It is a straightforward and self-contained story, while also leaving room for future sequels. Keep an eye out for Blue Beetle 2 in the next few decades.
