The Enigmatic Kid from The Matrix: A Closer Look at Michael Karl Popper

Exploring the mysterious and impressive backstory of the character known as the Kid in The Matrix franchise.

Unveiling the Kid's Backstory

The character known as the Kid in The Matrix franchise has long been one of the least favorite among audiences, but he surprisingly has a very cool backstory. While the first installment of the franchise focuses on the Nebuchadnezzar's crew, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions expand the universe, introducing Zion, and many other ships and secondary characters, such as Niobe, Lock, or Captain Mifune. Among those additions, the Kid, a minor character who ends up being quite relevant to the plot at the end of the third movie, comes across as an annoying teenager; however, he hides something greater.

The Kid appears for the first time in The Matrix Reloaded. In his first scene, he receives Neo, Trinity, and Link upon their arrival in Zion. He is presented as an irritating character that gets on Neo's nerves. The movie only shows his obsession with Neo as he claims he saved him, to which Neo replies, that he saved himself. None of the sequels give further explanation to this storyline; however, 2003's anthology film The Animatrix reveals his backstory. "Kid's Story" is the film’s fourth short film and tells how the Kid, whose name is revealed to be Michael Karl Popper, gets out of the Matrix.

Michael is a teenager still connected to the system who starts having dreams about his own death, which triggers questions about reality. Seeking answers, he begins to talk with Neo through his computer, who, at this point between the first and the second movie, takes Morpheus’ original role in The Matrix. Eventually, some agents visit Michael at school. The Kid receives a phone call from Neo, who tries to guide him away from the agents, but he ends up being surrounded. Convinced that reality is an illusion, the Kid jumps from the school’s rooftop. His belief gives Michael the mind power to subtract himself from the Matrix before dying. Once the Kid wakes up in the fields, Neo and Trinity manage to get to him before the machines do. Michael wakes up in the Nebuchadnezzar and the first people he sees are Neo and Trinity. Michael is, then, convinced that Neo save him. After all, first, Neo answered his questions, then he guided him away from the agents, and then, he arrived in time before the machines could plug him again. However, Neo knows that the Kid's own beliefs are the very thing that saved him and that is why, at that moment, he replies to Michael for the first time that he saved himself.

The Kid's Unusual Escape from the Matrix

The fact that the kid manages to effectively get out of the Matrix is impressive, and it makes him one of the strongest minds in The Matrix saga. Escaping the simulation of the Matrix is very unusual considering that few people are known to have experienced it. "World Record", for example, another The Animatrix short film, showcases the story of an athlete pushing the boundaries of his body trying to reach a personal record. His efforts to reach new limits spawn his awakening. However, this only lasts a few seconds as he is rapidly plugged in again by the machines. The fact that the kid manages to effectively get out of the Matrix is impressive, and it makes him one of the strongest minds in The Matrix saga, maybe even more than Neo’s, which makes it a shame that the Kid is not in The Matrix Resurrections.
