In 2018, Jam City and Portkey Games captured that magic in gaming form with Hogwarts Mystery. Despite facing challenges during its launch, the game allowed players to experience the enchantment of the Harry Potter universe. At Hogwarts, a school brimming with rich lore and mystery, the cursed vaults stand out as particularly intriguing. The origin of these vaults remains a mystery, adding to the captivating lore that players can explore in the game.

Hogwarts Mystery's storyline revolves around the Cursed Vaults, hidden chambers within Hogwarts. Players assume the role of Jacob's sibling, embarking on a quest with their friends to uncover the secrets and dangers lurking within these ancient vaults, all while searching for their missing sibling. The origins of the vaults are shrouded in mystery, with theories ranging from the involvement of the school's founders to the madness of a former headmaster. Of the five Vaults, the final one is believed to hold the true treasure, while the other four serve as decoys, each booby-trapped with its own curse. Overcoming each Cursed Vault presents unique challenges that require wit and skill. The first Cursed Vault encountered in the game is the Vault of Ice, hidden at the end of vanished stairs and guarded by a magical door steeped in icy enchantment on the fifth floor of Hogwarts Castle.

Hogwarts Mystery's Vaults Contain Secrets and Ancient Guardians

The door of the chamber is protected by lightning attacks, deterring potential trespassers. The chamber itself is guarded by an ice knight, acting as a defense against intruders. However, the Vault becomes a significant threat to the entire wizarding school when cursed ice is unexpectedly unleashed. In the Hogwarts Mystery game during the 1986-1987 school year, players uncover the second chamber known as the Vault of Fear. This chamber is similar to the Vault of Ice and is concealed within a prohibited section of the library. Within this cellar, three boggarts- creatures that embody a person's deepest fears- protect the secrets hidden inside. Despite the challenges, players bravely approach a column with a broken wand to gain entry and discover the secrets within, which include a shattered arrow and a map of the Forbidden Forest.

In the following year, 1987-1988, players stumble upon the Forest Vault, marking the appearance of the third Hogwarts Mystery Vault. Hidden deep within a grove of trees in the Forbidden Forest, this secretive strongroom is guarded by an Acromantula which uses the location as its lair to target unsuspecting sleepwalking students. Accessing the vault requires players to touch a column containing the centaur Torvus' arrow. Upon entering, they will encounter a portrait of a dragon and a small sweater.

The Buried Vault, the fourth chamber in Hogwarts Mystery, had a perplexing location that led many to believe it was underground. It was discovered by Jacob, Rakepick, and Pettigrew, who encountered a dragon guarding its door. However, Pettigrew quickly fled from the scene. In the 1988-1989 school year, Jacob's sibling and their friends successfully defeated the dragon and exposed Rakepick's true intentions. After liberating Jacob from a portrait, they confronted Rakepick, who eventually managed to escape with Jacob in pursuit.

As for the Sunken Vault, the fifth and final chamber, it is situated beyond Hogwarts Castle and concealed within a cave in the Great Lake. The vault is skillfully hidden within a statue of a Giant Squid. Once touched, the vault ensnares individuals in a disturbing loop of their darkest memories. During the 1990-1991 school year, Jacob, Ben Copper, Merula Snyde, and Jacob's sibling made an attempt to break into the vault, but they were unsuccessful in opening it. Therefore, the contents of the vault remain shrouded in mystery. This lack of answers has left numerous Harry Potter fans with lingering questions, making it highly desirable for Jam City to provide closure.
