The Mortal Kombat 1 roster is set to receive its first guest character this week with the addition of Omni-Man from Invincible. Despite not being a top contender for the title of "dad-of-the-year," Omni-Man possesses incredible power, ready to take on Earthrealm's defenders. Upon his arrival, Omni-Man will bring with him a unique set of offensive skills that showcase his Viltrumite heritage.
Past glimpses have already revealed some of his devastating offensive moves and a fatality that pays homage to the Invincible animated TV series. The development team at NetherRealm has strived to capture the nuance of Omni-Man's character from the original comic books and animated adaptation, drawing from various reference materials at their disposal.
The studio has previously created an evil Superman fighting game character, and they continue this trend with the inclusion of Homelander in Mortal Kombat 1. However, with Omni-Man, the studio introduces new exciting ideas to transform him into a rushdown character focused on speed and offense.
According to NetherRealm manager Nick Nicastro's explanation on the Xbox Wire blog, Omni-Man utilizes his Viltrumite stance to effectively evade enemy attacks and catch players off guard. Starting from the Viltrumite stance, Omni-Man can perform four distinct attacks, each serving a specific purpose and allowing for further combinations.
Passively, while in his Viltrumite stance, Omni-Man effortlessly evades projectiles, showing little concern for them, making him formidable against opponents who heavily rely on such attacks," Nicastro explained. "Additionally, the enhanced version of the Viltrumite stance enables Omni-Man to swiftly dodge close-range high and mid attacks. Finally, the player has the ability to teleport out of the Viltrumite stance, appearing behind the opponent and effectively canceling their actions."
Omni-Man's inclusion in Mortal Kombat 1 on November 9 marks the beginning of a wave of Invincible content that is currently being released. For those who own the Kombat Pack or as standalone DLC, Omni-Man is available as an early access bonus starting from November 16. This is just the beginning, as the first half of the show's second season is now streaming on Prime Video. Additionally, Amazon Prime subscribers can enjoy a free Invincible game featuring Atom Eve as part of their Prime Gaming benefits.
Editor's P/S
As a hard fan of the Invincible comic book series and animated TV show, I am thrilled to see Omni-Man make his debut as a playable character in Mortal Kombat 1. Omni-Man is a complex and compelling character, and I am excited to see how his unique fighting style will translate to the Mortal Kombat universe.
I appreciate the NetherRealm team's attention to detail in capturing Omni-Man's character and abilities. His move set looks devastating, and I can't wait to try out his fatality. I am also intrigued by the Viltrumite stance, which seems like a great way to evade enemy attacks and catch opponents off guard. Overall, I think Omni-Man is a great addition to the Mortal Kombat 1 roster, and I can't wait to see how he fares against the other characters.
