Neagley's Role in Reacher Season 1
Amazon's Reacher avoids delving into the details of Neagley and Reacher's relationship but drops enough clues to highlight why they never got together. Although Reacher season 1 stays loyal to most story elements from Lee Child's Killing Floor, it brings minor changes to the original storyline to effectively traverse it to the audiovisual storytelling medium and set the stage for future seasons. Neagley's introduction in Reacher season 1 is among the biggest changes from the source that set up the Amazon show's season 2.
Reacher Season 2 Will Prove How Important Neagley Really Is
Instead of waiting for season 2, Amazon's Reacher establishes in its first season itself that Neagley is one of Reacher's former team members from the U.S. Army 110th MP Special Investigations Unit. It also subtly reveals how Reacher only calls her for help and no one else from their team because he trusts her and her skills. However, despite giving away these details about their professional relationship, the show maintains an air of ambiguity surrounding their dynamic beyond their professional endeavors. This makes it hard not to wonder if they are secretly in love or have a purely platonic relationship.

The Platonic Relationship
In the Amazon show, Neagley and Reacher have a strictly platonic relationship. Like the original Lee Child books, Amazon's Reacher perfectly captures their chemistry by highlighting how the two characters are friends and former coworkers, expecting nothing more from their relationship. The show also establishes that, even though they have no intentions of moving their relationship in another direction, they are always there for each other and can call one another when they need help. However, since Reacher and Neagley understand each other's lifestyle choices, they do not get in touch unless something urgent comes up.
Reacher-Neagley
Like the books, Amazon's Reacher portrays Neagley as the titular character's female version. She is intimidating, highly competent, and has an air of mysteriousness to her personality that mirrors Reacher's stoic demeanor. Although she does not remain cut off from the world like Reacher and does not even emulate his hobo lifestyle, she has her own boundaries. For instance, even though she seemingly enjoys an active social life and stays in touch with her comrades from the military police, she does not like being touched. Instead of questioning her boundaries, Reacher respects them both in the books and the show.

The Future of Their Relationship
Jack Reacher, on the other hand, loves the open road more than anything else and, as he quotes in Reacher season 1, needs nothing but a 't-shirt and jeans.' Most do not see eye to eye with Reacher's minimalistic choices and need for solitude. Even for viewers of the show and readers of Lee Child's novels, it is hard not to wonder why Reacher refuses to settle down. However, like Jack understands and respects Neagley, Neagley, too, does not judge Jack's resolute commitment to traveling miles without having a clue where he will end up next. Their shared traits in Amazon's Reacher almost completely rule out a future romance because they highlight how neither of them is seeking long-term commitment.
