Ortega portrays Cairo, a talented high school student, who develops a bond with her English teacher, Jonathan Miller (Freeman). However, when he rebuffs her romance, tensions rise and Cairo takes control of the situation.
Ortega's departure from the Scream franchise was confirmed by multiple sources weeks before news of her new project surfaced. She had portrayed Tara Carpenter since the release of the fifth film in 2022 but had to leave ahead of the seventh installment due to her filming commitments for season 2 of Netflix's Wednesday.
Even before the release of the trailer for Miller's Girl, fans were expressing doubts about the movie's message. There were initial concerns that the film would glorify a romantic relationship between a student and a teacher.
