Eric Kripke's adaptation of Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson's comic series has exceeded expectations, capturing the attention of superhero fans with Seth Rogen's involvement. Season four has recently concluded filming, but a release date has yet to be announced. While awaiting further updates, it's important to keep the most recent season of The Boys in mind.
In today's entertainment landscape, superhero content often elicits a peculiar cultural response. While dedicated fans of cinematic universes eagerly consume any new offering, the general public appears to be less inclined to engage with the genre. However, The Boys stands as an exception, gaining recognition through positive word-of-mouth and an ability to consistently surprise its audience.
What happens in The Boys season 3?
The Boys' third season starts one year after the shocking revelation of Stormfront's dark past. The scandal of employing a Nazi prompts the US government to assign young congresswoman Victoria Neuman as the head of the Bureau of Superhuman Affairs. Billy Butcher and his team, known as the Boys, work as independent contractors, tracking down and capturing rogue supers. Hughie acts as their liaison from the office and gains minor fame after publicly revealing his relationship with Annie "Starlight" January. Vought, the company behind the supers, promotes Starlight to co-captain of the Seven, its premier superhero team, for a positive public image. However, Butcher remains discontented. He exhaustively searches for a weapon capable of killing Homelander, the most powerful supe. Through Queen Maeve, he uncovers a disbanded superhero group named Payback and a temporary version of a substance called Compound V, referred to as V24. Meanwhile, Hughie discovers that Neuman, the congresswoman, is the telekinetic supe responsible for killing numerous people the previous year.
Butcher's new objective becomes tracking down Soldier Boy, the leader of the now-defunct Payback. Soldier Boy was believed to have died during a failed mission in Nicaragua. Mother's Milk, who had previously left the Boys, is drawn back into the fight to seek revenge and eliminate Soldier Boy, the man responsible for killing his family. Homelander, the unstable leader of the Seven, gains popularity among rural white men after going on a fiery public rant. After Stormfront's suicide, Homelander begins psychologically tormenting Starlight and pressuring her to pretend to be his romantic partner. Vought organizes a staged reality competition to choose a new member of the Seven, but Homelander disrupts the process at every opportunity. After a questionable deal with Frenchie's former boss, Butcher, Hughie, and Kimiko locate Soldier Boy. They discover that he has been kept captive for decades and subjected to Russian experiments. Soldier Boy unleashes a mysterious energy blast that strips Kimiko of her powers.
Hughie and Butcher are faced with Supes, prompting them to rely on V24. The Boys uncover the treachery of Payback, which led to Soldier Boy's quest for revenge against his former teammates. Butcher manages to establish a precarious alliance with the former top-ranked superhero. The trio of Hughie, Butcher, and Soldier Boy pursue a target who happens to be present at an event known as "Herogasm," resulting in another unintended explosion caused by Soldier Boy. Homelander launches an attack, but the usage of V24 enables Hughie and Butcher to stand their ground. Just as Soldier Boy is about to neutralize Homelander, the formidable Supe evades capture. Maeve is imprisoned due to her assistance to Butcher. With only the remaining two members of the Seven protecting Homelander, he becomes an uncontrollable menace. The Boys, along with Butcher, face the difficult decision of whether to join forces with a formidable creature in order to defeat Homelander.
How does The Boys season 3 end?
The relationships between Homelander and Butcher with Ryan, Homelander's biological son, and Butcher's late wife, Becca, have been complex. The boy harbors some sympathy towards Homelander. Annie discloses to Butcher that V24 will eventually prove fatal, however, he keeps this information to himself. Kimiko regains her powers through a Compound V injection. Soldier Boy reveals to Homelander that he is his biological father. In response, Homelander kills Black Noir for withholding this information. The situation reaches a climax when Butcher assembles the Boys, Maeve, Starlight, and all available V24, along with Soldier Boy, with the intention of finally eliminating Homelander. Although most of the group opposes the plan, Maeve sides with Butcher, arguing that Homelander must be killed. As the team becomes ensnared in a secure location, Butcher, Maeve, and Soldier Boy depart for Vought Tower.
Butcher, Maeve, and Soldier Boy restrain Homelander, intending to weaken him, but Ryan fiercely defends his father. During a confrontation, Butcher realizes he cannot support Soldier Boy's brutal tactics. Starlight, Frenchie, Hughie, and Mother's Milk manage to escape captivity and infiltrate the tower. Butcher engages in a fight with Soldier Boy, eventually defeating him with assistance from Starlight. MM, Starlight, Kimiko, and Butcher attempt to incapacitate Soldier Boy with gas. Meanwhile, Maeve and Homelander engage in a violent brawl. Maeve loses an eye but retaliates by impaling Homelander's ear with a metal rod, leaving him partially deaf. The fight is disrupted when Soldier Boy threatens to explode. Maeve tackles him out of a window, surviving but losing her powers. The public believes she is dead. Homelander strikes a secret arrangement with Neuman, eliminating a vice presidential candidate to allow Neuman to take over. Butcher receives a terminal diagnosis, with a maximum of 18 months left to live. Starlight resigns from the Seven and joins the Boys. In the final moments of the season, Homelander attends a rally, where fans are deeply divided between support for Starlight's exposure of Vought's crimes and Homelander's clear fascism. Homelander unexpectedly kills a fan of Starlight in the crowd, and much to his surprise, he receives applause. Even Ryan, Homelander's son, appears pleased.
Season three of The Boys concludes with Butcher on the brink of death, the Boys barely surviving, Maeve stripped of her powers, Soldier Boy in federal custody, Neuman on her way to the White House, the Seven in ruins, and Homelander more monstrous than ever. It is a bleak ending. The people can no longer resist Homelander's tyranny, as they are now on his side. As Butcher confronts his own mortality, it may be difficult to witness how he attempts to complete his final mission in the upcoming season.
