Marvel is commemorating the 50th anniversary of Wolverine with the ultra-violent Sabretooth War, which is already proving to be the deadliest showdown yet. Once again, Wolverine and his long-standing rival Sabretooth are locked in a brutal battle for survival, with the stakes higher than ever.
This time, things may be different. Sabretooth War is marketed as the “the most violent Wolverine story ever” with a clear NOT FOR KIDS warning printed on the cover. And it lives up to that label. The preview pages show a group of maimed X-Men and a Cyclops who has been torn in half.
This story is a culmination of the current X-Men book series. Following the Hellfire Massacre, mutant resurrection is no longer an option. Once a mutant dies, they are gone for good, and Sabretooth War is taking full advantage of that with a series of deaths.

If you’re keeping score, here’s everyone who died in Wolverine: Sabretooth War so far.
Wolverine #41
The deaths of Kid Omega/Quentin Quire, Fang/Akihiro, and numerous X-Men occur in the first chapter of Sabretooth War, putting many beloved characters like Sage and X-23/Laura Kinney in jeopardy. The issue begins with the revelation that Sabretooths from different dimensions have been training to become ultimate killers by killing multiversal X-Men on Orchis Station Five. These Sabretooths then launch an attack on Krakoa, but are surprised to find it deserted after being absent during the Hellfire Gala massacre.
X-Force member Kid Omega investigates the presence on Krakoa, thinking it’s just mutants who have found their way home. Instead, he finds Sabretooths, who slash his throat and take him back to Station Five, where he’s eaten alive.
Marvel ComicsFang meets a grisly fate in Sabretooth War, all in the name of taunting Wolverine.
What is Sabretooth War?
The assault by the Sabretooths is carried out at the North Pole, where Wolverine is in hiding alongside other X-Force members. Sabretooth not only kills Logan’s son, Akihiro, but also targets other mutants under the protection at the North Pole. In a final cruel gesture, Sabretooth arranges the bodies to send Logan a chilling message: Happy Birthday.
The Sabretooth War takes place after the Fall of X, pitting Wolverine against Sabretooth once again. This ongoing tradition of Sabretooth attacking and tormenting Wolverine on his birthday is commemorated in this event, which also celebrates Wolverine's 50th anniversary in the real world. The popular X-Man made his first appearance in 1974's The Incredible Hulk #180.

Editor's P/S
As an enthusiastic fan of Wolverine, I am both thrilled and horrified by the upcoming Sabretooth War event. On the one hand, I can't wait to see Wolverine and Sabretooth go head-to-head in what is being billed as the most violent Wolverine story ever. The preview pages show that this is not going to be for the faint of heart, with a high body count and some truly gruesome deaths.
On the other hand, I am also concerned about the impact that this event will have on the X-Men universe. With mutant resurrection no longer an option, every death in Sabretooth War will be permanent. This could have a devastating impact on the X-Men, and I worry that it will leave the team weaker than ever. I hope that Marvel has a plan to address this, and that they don't just use Sabretooth War as an excuse to kill off a bunch of popular characters.
