The announcement of the new Dragon Ball Daima anime has sent shockwaves through the Dragon Ball fandom. While most fans are thrilled about this exciting addition to the franchise, there are also concerns arising from comparing it to its predecessors, Dragon Ball GT and Dragon Ball Super. The controversy surrounding GT is widely known, and although Super enjoyed great success and popularity, there are still fans who hold criticisms against it. However, Dragon Ball Daima seems to have already addressed most of the issues that were raised with GT and Super.
During New York Comic-Con, it was officially announced that Dragon Ball Daima will be the next chapter in this beloved franchise. The anime, which is being produced by Toei Animation, will feature a captivating storyline where Goku and the rest of the main characters are transformed into children by an enigmatic antagonist. This plot point may ring a bell for fans as it harkens back to the beginning of Dragon Ball GT.
Dragon Ball Daima will have the direct involvement of Akira Toriyama, who will not only handle character design (as he did with GT), but also take charge of creating the story and setting. This fact alone should reassure fans. Moreover, there is an even more crucial aspect that guarantees Daima will surpass the widely criticized GT and even the currently ongoing Dragon Ball Super.
Dragon Ball Daima Doesn't Need To End The Franchise
The main difference between the other two series is straightforward: Dragon Ball Daima doesn't need to conclude the franchise. Dragon Ball GT, occurring after Dragon Ball Z, faced the challenging task of ending the franchise that had already concluded. This resulted in a peculiar and unfavorable situation. Naturally, Dragon Ball fans desired more content after the original series concluded, heightening their expectations for GT. The outcome was even more disappointing when GT had to surpass Toriyama's own ending for Dragon Ball Z while also providing closure for one of the most beloved franchises in history. Fans are well aware of how this turned out, as Dragon Ball GT's ending remains highly controversial and criticized.
In contrast, Dragon Ball Super had a much warmer reception than GT since it served as an official sequel to Z with direct involvement from Toriyama. Nevertheless, it also faces the lingering issue of how it will ultimately conclude. In theory, Super is set in the 10-year gap between Majin Buu's defeat and the final chapter of Dragon Ball Z, but as the series progresses, it becomes increasingly difficult to reconcile with Z's ending. This prompts the question of whether Super will alter Z's ending, which would anger "purist" fans, or maintain its canon, potentially resulting in plot inconsistencies. Fortunately, none of these concerns apply to Dragon Ball Daima, which seems to be a spin-off taking place either during Super or prior to its commencement, based on the limited available information.
Fans Will Judge Dragon Ball Daima For What It Is
Dragon Ball Daima is expected to be a standalone narrative, allowing fans to appreciate it for what it is. With the pressure of concluding one of the most beloved franchises in history alleviated, thanks to Dragon Ball Super's continuation of the main storyline, Daima simply needs to present a compelling story that aligns with the larger franchise. Given Toriyama's direct involvement, it is highly likely that this expectation will be met. While fans will ultimately evaluate Dragon Ball Daima upon its release in 2024, it is evident that the series is unburdened by many of the issues that hindered both Dragon Ball GT and Dragon Ball Super.
