In the long-standing British television series Doctor Who, there have been a total of 40 regular companions who have accompanied The Doctor. However, out of all these companions, there has been only one instance where a companion was recast. Doctor Who follows the story of a solitary Timelord who travels through time and space to protect the galaxy. The Doctor rarely embarks on these journeys alone and is typically accompanied by one or two companions. Interestingly, despite encountering various species, The Doctor's companions are almost always human.
These human individuals play a crucial role in grounding The Doctor and reminding them of their moral compass while facing adversaries. However, there was one exception with Romana, who, like The Doctor, was also a Timelord. Initially portrayed by Mary Tamm, Romana's character was recast after one season, making it the only instance of a companion being replaced in Doctor Who. This unexpected change has left many fans understandably perplexed about the decision.
Doctor Who Recast Romana When Mary Tamm Left The Show
Mary Tamm joined the cast of Doctor Who in 1978, acting alongside Tom Baker, who played the Fourth Doctor. At first, Tamm was unsure about taking on the role as the Doctor's companion, as she didn't want to play the stereotypical "damsel in distress" commonly associated with that position. However, the producers managed to persuade her by offering a unique opportunity to portray a Time Lady, a respected member of the Time Lord race, which would establish her as the Doctor's equal. When she initially appeared on the show, her character displayed strength and intelligence, and even looked down on the Doctor, perceiving them as academically inferior.
As the season progressed, Romana's perspective of the Doctor changed, and she began to see him more as a mentor figure. In a BBC interview, Tamm explained, "I decided to leave because the role didn't meet the expectations set for it, and there was no further development for the character." Tamm clarified that her decision to leave was driven by the fact that the empowered and strong Time Lady she was initially promised to portray had transformed into the very "damsel in distress" stereotype she had hoped to avoid. After Tamm's departure from the show, the character of Romana regenerated into Romana II, played by Lalla Ward from 1979 to 1981.
Mary Tamm Was Right About Doctor Who's Companion Problem
Mary Tamm hesitated to join Doctor Who because she didn't want to be portrayed as a helpless character. Throughout the series, the companions, predominantly female, are captivated by The Doctor and leave behind their families and sometimes even relationships to explore the universe. This has been a defining characteristic of the show from the beginning and continues in the reboot. Even Donna Noble, who stood out for not falling in love with The Doctor, eventually required rescuing. When she gained Time Lord abilities, The Doctor had to erase her memories to save her, making Donna the most tragic companion as she had become a true partner to The Doctor.
Donna's experience confirmed the recurring pattern among companions, where they ultimately return to the role of being saved by The Doctor. This realization validated Mary Tamm's initial concerns about joining Doctor Who, as she wanted to portray a character who could stand on her own without relying on The Doctor for salvation. This characteristic is all too familiar for the typical companion of The Doctor, yet it remains a challenge for the series to address.
