Unscripted Gems: Top 3 Rom-Com Improvised Moments

Let's delve into some of the most unforgettable improvised moments in popular rom-coms that have solidified their place in cinematic history.

Tom Hanks made the best out of a minor inconvenience. A small problem while filming a scene of You've Got Mail made way for an improvised moment by Tom Hanks that became one of the most memorable scenes in the movie. When Hanks’ Joe leaves Meg Ryan’s Kathleen’s bookshop with balloons and a goldfish, Hanks accidentally closes the door on the balloons. This led Hanks to ad-lib the line “good thing it wasn’t the fish”. Director Nora Ephron loved the moment and kept it in the movie, serving as proof of Hanks’ incredible comedic timing and improvisation skills.

Alicia Silverstone’s honest mistake was perfect for Cher. Amy Heckerling’s Clueless has a couple of improvised moments, such as Donald Faison’s Murray justifying his decision to shave his head with “I’m keeping it real!”, but the most notable improvised moment came from the movie’s star, Alicia Silverstone. During a speech in class, Cher very confidently explained her posture on immigrants and what the country should do with Haitians… but she mispronounced “Haitians”. This was an honest mistake from Silverstone, which Heckerling decided to keep and it’s easy to see why, as it’s exactly what Cher Horowitz would have done.

What could have been a blooper was a very Mia moment. Throughout The Princess Diaries, the audience saw Mia Thermopolis (Anna Hathaway) go from a socially awkward girl to the Princess of Genovia… but it was an interesting process. In a scene at school, Mia and her best friend Lilly are talking while walking up and down the bleachers when Mia slips and falls. Hathaway told ABC (via Glamour) that they were filming in San Francisco and it had rained, so she ended up slipping, falling, and laughing. Director Garry Marshall decided to keep the scene as he found it to be charming, and Hathaway can be seen gesturing at the crew to keep filming.
