Despite encountering competition and challenges outside of franchising, the film has displayed resilience and acts as a symbol of hope for unique content. The sci-fi film The Creator, produced by New Regency and starring John David Washington, Gemma Chan, and Madeleine Yuna Voyles, has made impressive progress in the global box office. After its fifth weekend, The Creator has earned an estimated $97.3 million worldwide, just shy of the projected $100 million mark. To break it down, it has made $38.8 million domestically and a commendable $58.5 million internationally.
Despite facing competition and the challenges that often come with non-franchise films, Gareth Edwards' The Creator has shown resilience. It provides hope for original content that isn't based on existing intellectual property. As it enters its sixth week, international earnings have declined by 51%, bringing in $2.2 million during its fifth week. Meanwhile, domestic earnings totaled $1 million. However, there were positive aspects for this sci-fi IMAX epic. France and Germany, in particular, demonstrated solid performance with drops of only 33% and 34% respectively. Additionally, The Creator holds the top spot for non-local movies in Japan and ranks fourth in Australia.
While the film's total budget of $80 million may not be ideal for its overall performance, its sustained interest in select international markets indicates a broader appeal. Director Edwards' unique plot and visual approach, which were effectively marketed prior to the film's release, seem to have resonated well with audiences in Europe and Asia (the film was shot in 80+ regions of Asia). This trend is underscored by the cumulative box office figures from key European markets such as the UK ($8.0M), France ($6.3M), and Germany ($5.0M), as well as Asian markets like Korea ($2.0M) and Hong Kong ($1.5M).
'The Creator' and 'Five Nights at Freddy's' Among 2023’s Unpredictable Box Office
The box office reception of The Creator was initially anticipated to be successful due to the buzz surrounding its breathtaking visuals achieved on a limited budget. In a surprising turn of events, however, Five Nights at Freddy's, despite receiving a dismal critics rating of 25% on Rotten Tomatoes, has managed to garner considerable success, earning a remarkable $130 million globally during its opening weekend. Nonetheless, both films pale in comparison to the unprecedented success of the "Barbenheimer" phenomenon during the summer, with Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer opening to an impressive $174 million and Greta Gerwig's Barbie raking in an astounding $337 million on the same weekend.
After a substantial hiatus, Gareth Edwards makes a comeback with The Creator, following the triumphs of his 2014 blockbuster Godzilla reboot, which amassed $529 million worldwide, and 2016's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which raked in a staggering $1 billion. The Creator has garnered mixed reactions, earning a respectable 67% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Our website's Maggie Lovitt describes it as a film that falls neither into the realm of a masterpiece nor a complete failure in her review.
The release date for The Creator's DVD and Blu-Ray is yet to be announced. Stay tuned to our website for future updates. Meanwhile, you can catch it on the silver screen in the U.S. until it becomes available on Disney+ or Hulu. Secure your tickets below.
