Riverdale is no more, but The Archies are making their debut on Netflix. What's the show about, and where can you stream it?

Riverdale, the dramatic and mysterious series that brought the characters from Archie Comics to life in unconventional ways, concluded this year, leaving fans both saddened and relieved.

The CW show remains a hit on Netflix, and now a new movie based on the comics is in the works, this time with a Desi spin. The Archies will bring a fresh take on Riverdale to the big screen. Curious about the plot, cast, and if it's worth watching? Keep reading to find out.

What is The Archies about?

The Archies is a movie musical adaptation of the Archie comics, this time set in India in the 1960s. It will be available on Netflix as of Thursday, December 7, 2023.

Check out the trailer below:

Synopsis: "Taking place in 1960s India, Archie and his friends must juggle love, friendship, and the preservation of Riverdale's park from developers who aim to demolish it."

Renowned Indian director Zoya Akhtar helms the film, with production support from Reema Kagti and Sharad Devarajan through their companies Tiger Baby and Graphic India.

The film will be a length of 2 hours and 23 minutes, though with it being a musical, the pacing will likely help that time fly by.

The Archies cast: Who’s in it?

The Archies features a primarily South Asian cast, including but not limited to:

Agastya Nanda as Archie Andrews

Khushi Kapoor as Betty Cooper

Suhana Khan as Veronica Lodge

Mihir Ahuja as Jughead Jones

Vedang Raina as Reggie Mantle

Jamie Alter as Mike Gomes

Yuvraj Menda as Dilton Doiley

Abhinandan Tejaswi as Dennis

Is The Archies worth watching?

Zoya Akhtar, in an interview with Variety, expressed her deep connection to the Archie franchise, stating, "It was a large part of my childhood and teenage years. The characters are iconic and globally loved, which is also why I am a little nervous. I have to make sure the film stokes the nostalgia of a generation that grew up on the comic and yet resonates with the young adults today."

The Archies don’t have a Rotten Tomatoes score yet because it hasn’t been released on Netflix, but the movie seems to be generating a lot of hype on social media.

Netflix is showing The Archies, which is set in 1960s India in a place similar to Riverdale? How did I not know about this before, and why does it appear to be so exciting?," wrote one X/Twitter user. "I'm unreasonably excited for The Archies Netflix movie. Should I watch Riverdale as preparation or not?" another user posted.

We will update this section when reviews come out.

Editor's P/S

As a hard fan of the original Archie Comics and the Riverdale series, I am thrilled about the upcoming release of The Archies on Netflix. The idea of a Riverdale remake set in 1960s India is incredibly exciting and refreshing. The trailer looks promising, and I can't wait to see how the characters and storylines are adapted to this new setting. The cast seems talented and diverse, and I am eager to see their interpretations of the beloved Archie characters.

However, I also have some concerns about the movie. The Riverdale series took a lot of creative liberties with the original comics, and I hope that The Archies will stay true to the spirit of the source material while still bringing something new and exciting to the table. I am also a bit worried about the length of the movie, as 2 hours and 23 minutes is quite long for a musical. I hope that the pacing is good and that the musical numbers are well-integrated into the story. Overall, I am cautiously optimistic about The Archies and can't wait to see it when it releases on Netflix on December 7th.
