WARNING! Spoilers ahead for The Afterparty season 2, episodes 1 & 2!
In The Afterparty season 2, Detective Danner returns to investigate a murder that takes place at a wedding afterparty. The groom, Edgar, is killed, and there are 10 characters suspected of being responsible. This comedic whodunit series on Apple TV brings back three original characters from The Afterparty: Detective Danner, Aniq, and Zoe. Aniq and Zoe, who previously solved a murder at their high school reunion's afterparty, now find themselves involved in another murder mystery. This time, the victim is Zoe's new brother-in-law, Edgar.
Each episode of The Afterparty season 2 is narrated by a different murder suspect, each told through the lens of various movie genres. These different perspectives help Detective Danner piece together the truth behind Edgar's death. So far, Aniq and Grace have shared their stories, and the remaining episodes of The Afterparty season 2 will showcase the night in question from the perspectives of eight other wedding guests. These suspects range from immediate family members and new in-laws to the bride and unrelated guests. All 10 primary suspects must prove their innocence to Detective Danner.
10 Aniq
In The Afterparty's second season premiere, Aniq, a kind character portrayed by Sam Richardson, once again finds himself in the position of being a murder suspect. This time, he attends the wedding of his girlfriend Zoe's sister, where Aniq is already on the radar as a suspect in the murder of his former classmate Xavier. However, Aniq was eventually cleared of any involvement when the true culprit, his old friend Yasper, was revealed. Aniq had recently won over Zoe, his long-time crush, at their high school reunion, and he hopes to gain the approval of her parents during the wedding. Unfortunately, the joyous occasion takes a dark turn when the groom, Edgar, is discovered dead the next morning. This unexpected development casts suspicion on Aniq as an unlikely suspect in Edgar's murder.
The events of the wedding are recounted in a rom-com style during the season 2 premiere of The Afterparty. Aniq appears to be cleared of suspicion by Detective Danner, although he does withhold some evidence in order to protect the bride, Grace, from becoming the prime suspect. After eventually revealing clues that could potentially implicate Grace, Danner involves Aniq as her "partner" in an unofficial investigation. However, it remains unclear whether Aniq had any secret or unintentional involvement in Edgar's death.
9 Grace
8 Zoe
The morning after her wedding, Grace, Zoe's sister, finds herself in a chilling predicament. Not only has her husband been tragically poisoned, but she also becomes the prime suspect in his murder. As she recounts the events of her wedding night, it unfolds like a captivating Austenian period drama. Grace confesses to slipping crushed Adderall, not poison, into Edgar's drink with the intention of keeping him awake for the afterparty. However, Edgar's mother, Isabel, insinuates that Grace's motive was to inherit his substantial wealth. Yet, Grace's narrative ultimately points away from her guilt, shedding light on a surprising twist. It appears that Zoe, her own sister, may have some connection to Edgar's demise, as revealed in Season 2 of The Afterparty.
Coming off the resolution of Xavier's murder case in the season 1 finale of The Afterparty, Zoe finds herself in a much more personal role as a suspect in season 2 of the Apple TV series. After entering a romantic relationship with Aniq in season 1, Zoe brings him along as her date to her sister Grace's wedding. However, Zoe is concerned that Grace may not truly want to marry Edgar. When Zoe advises Grace to reconsider marrying Edgar if she is not happy, fingers start pointing at Zoe as a potential killer who may have taken Edgar's life to protect her sister from a marriage that lacks joy. The truth behind Zoe's involvement will be revealed only at the end of The Afterparty season 2, as it holds the key to identifying Edgar's murderer.
7 Ulysses
6 Isabel
Another suspect in Edgar's murder is Zoe and Grace's Uncle Ulysses. In season 2 of John Cho's The Afterparty, Ulysses appears during the rehearsal dinner as a "gift" from Edgar to Grace. Throughout the event, the eccentric Ulysses leaves a lasting impression. The first two episodes of The Afterparty imply that Ulysses may have poisoned the camel's milk he brings in a horn, as both Edgar and his lizard refuse to drink it after sensing something strange. While it is possible that poison could have been added to Edgar's drink during the night, it remains unclear what motive Ulysses would have had to kill Edgar after the wedding.Elizabeth Perkins portrays Isabel, Edgar's mother who is also under suspicion for his death. However, her motives remain undisclosed. Isabel, a widow and the adoptive mother of Hannah, harbors apparent aversion towards Grace, her family, and Aniq during The Afterparty season 2. It is worth noting that Isabel swiftly accuses other guests with baseless accusations, suggesting the possibility that she may be diverting attention away from herself in relation to her son's tragic fate.
5 Hannah
4 Sebastian
Hannah, Edgar's adoptive sister, is also under suspicion regarding the groom's murder. It is possible that this suspicion stems from the fact that Hannah and Edgar always have to mention her adoption when discussing their family ties. It appears that Hannah is estranged from her family members, which may be related to her adoption. In The Afterparty season 2, episode 2, Grace's account implies a close bond with her new sister-in-law, but it is conceivable that Hannah still harbored ill intentions towards her brother. The motive behind Hannah's actions remains unclear, but it is evident that the family's dynamics in The Afterparty contain deeper layers yet to be unveiled.
In The Afterparty season 2, Sebastian, the best man, emerges as an intriguing suspect with a possible motive of business or personal rivalry against Edgar. With his captivating charm, Sebastian manages to win over Grace and Zoe's family, much to the irritation of Aniq. His actions raise suspicion, especially when he advises Grace to demand a first dance from Edgar, potentially serving as a distraction from his own undisclosed intentions. Despite their close friendship, Sebastian remains a prime suspect in The Afterparty season 2.
3 Vivian
2 Feng
Despite hardly uttering a few words in the first two episodes of The Afterparty season 2, it would be a startling revelation if Grace and Zoe's mother, Vivian, turned out to be Edgar's killer. Even though she was present at the wedding afterparty as a guest, she remains a viable suspect in the murder case. The possibility arises that Vivian may have accidentally caused Edgar's death, considering she lacks a motive to poison her newly acquired son-in-law. Nevertheless, Vivian's status as the least-likely suspect only adds to the intrigue surrounding her involvement in this crime.
While Zoe and Grace’s father, Feng, portrayed by Ken Jeong, does not hide his dislike for Aniq, he appears to have no animosity towards Edgar. In fact, Feng seems to relish in the extravagant wedding that his family hosts, all the while promoting his Taiwanese shaved ice business. Aniq and Grace's accounts do not definitively implicate Feng in Edgar's demise. However, it is possible that he and Edgar were involved in a conflict unbeknownst to the two characters. As Feng's perspective is revealed later in The Afterparty season 2, there is still ample time to determine his involvement in the crime.
1 Travis
Travis, Grace's ex-boyfriend, emerges as a clear suspect in Edgar's murder. Despite being invited to the wedding out of politeness, Travis seems to still hold strong emotions for Grace. He has been overheard expressing his desire to "save" her prior to the ceremony. In The Afterparty season 2, Travis portrays himself as an amateur detective, raising suspicions that this facade may be a distraction from his potential involvement in harming Edgar. While there have been no evident conflicts between Edgar and Travis, the envious ex-boyfriend stands out as a plausible culprit.
