Three individuals lost their lives and 27 others were hurt in what is being described as a "terrorist attack" at a hotel close to Somalia's presidential palace. The country's state broadcaster, Somalia National Television (SNTV), shared this tragic news.
SNTV reported that on Thursday night, five armed gunmen launched an attack on the SYL Hotel in the capital city of Mogadishu. Fortunately, Somali security forces were able to swiftly intervene, resulting in the elimination of all five attackers as confirmed by Somali police.
Three soldiers lost their lives in the attack, with 27 others sustaining injuries, according to SNTV. Additionally, many individuals, including government officials, were safely evacuated from the hotel by security forces.
Although the organization responsible for the attack was not specified by SNTV, Somali police spokesman Colonel Qasim Ahmed Roble informed AFP that the perpetrators were members of the terrorist group Al-Shabaab.
Somalian President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud visited injured victims of the attack at Erdoğan Hospital in Mogadishu on Friday, according to the state broadcaster.
The US Embassy in Mogadishu strongly condemned the terrorist attack and expressed their commitment to supporting Somali efforts to defeat al-Shabaab in a post on X.
The US currently has less than 500 troops in Somalia. These troops are assisting the Somali government in their fight against al-Shabaab militants. They are also involved in carrying out strikes on al-Shabaab targets. The US views al-Shabaab as the largest al-Qaeda network in the world and one of the most formidable, capable of attacking US forces and interests.
Josep Borrell, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, recently spoke out against the attack by Al-Shabaab at the SYL Hotel in Mogadishu. In a post on X, Borrell expressed his condemnation of the attack. He also praised the efforts of the Somali forces for successfully completing their operation and neutralizing the assailants.
The United Nations in Somalia noted that the attack was a violation of the values of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
