A 14-year-old has been arrested by Thai police following a shooting at a shopping mall in the capital city of Bangkok on Tuesday. The incident resulted in a minimum of three fatalities and four individuals sustaining injuries. The local authorities have apprehended the suspect, who was found with a weapon, and are currently evaluating the precise number of casualties. The Central Investigation Bureau of Thailand is overseeing the investigation.
The shooting occurred at approximately 5 p.m. local time (6 a.m. ET) at Bangkok's Siam Paragon Mall, according to Police Colonel Noppadol Thiammekha, Chief of Pathum Wan Police, as reported by CNN. Compared to other countries in the region, gun ownership is prevalent in this Southeast Asian nation.
In 2017, the Small Arms Survey (SAS) reported that over 10.3 million civilians in Thailand possessed firearms, equivalent to approximately 15 guns for every 100 people. Among these firearms, 6.2 million were legally registered. According to the 2019 Global Burden of Disease database from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington, Thailand ranks second in terms of gun homicides in Southeast Asia, following the Philippines.
Mass shootings in the country are infrequent. In October 2022, a tragic incident took place at a child care center in northeastern Thailand, resulting in the loss of at least 36 lives due to a gun and knife attack. This devastating event in Nong Bua Lamphu province is considered the deadliest incident of its nature in the country.
