Australian tennis player, Marc Polmans, expressed his regret for inadvertently striking chair umpire Ben Anderson in the face with a ball during a qualifying match at the Shanghai Masters. Polmans, who was leading Italy's Stefano Napolitano 7-6 6-6 and had a match point in the tiebreak, immediately took responsibility for the incident.
Polmans, the 140th-ranked player in the world, was disqualified from Tuesday's match. A win in that match would have given him a place in the main draw.
"I have apologized to the umpire, Ben, who has accepted my apology. He understands that my actions were unintentional, and I hit the ball on the frame out of frustration in the heat of the moment," stated Polmans on X (previously known as Twitter).
Both of us will move forward. The situation was highly pressurized, and I should have responded more effectively. According to Reuters, Polman will forfeit all the points and prize money he earned during the tournament, but the ATP Tour will not impose any additional penalties on him.
Six years prior, Denis Shapovalov issued an apology and faced a $7,000 fine after unintentionally hitting a chair umpire with a ball during a Davis Cup match. Similarly, in the 2020 US Open, Novak Djokovic was disqualified for accidentally striking a line judge with a ball.
