Temtem, a creature-collecting game, has captured attention in the gaming world with its extensive customization options, challenging gameplay, and intense competitive battles. With its latest 1.5 update, Temtem introduces the enigmatic Mythical creature, Umbras, along with Season 5, aptly named Endless Night. In an interview with Game Rant, Crema Game Director Guillermo Andrades, Producer Mariana Irazu, and Art Director Cristina Jimenez divulge details about Umbras, their role in the Endless Night season, and the exciting new Mythic Lair and final Mythical Temtem. Temtem is known for its difficulty, offering an arduous campaign that can be tackled solo or with a partner, featuring tough battles and unexpected surprises. In the upcoming patch 1.5, players will face the ultimate challenge in the new Fiery Inferno area, engaging in battles to complete a quest and unlock Galios, the third Mythical Temtem, as well as uncovering more secrets of the Endless Night. Umbras, the exceptionally rare creatures, surpass even the highly sought-after Lumas, with odds of encountering them at a staggering 1 in 75,000. However, their impeccable stats and exclusive access to all Egg Techniques make them worth pursuing for dedicated players. This interview has been condensed for clarity and conciseness.
Q: Was it always your intention to introduce Umbras in the season called Endless Night, or did you make changes to align with the release schedule and theme? Can we expect Umbra-themed content in the season?
Andrades: Absolutely! Introducing Umbras in the season called Endless Night was part of our original plan. We began considering the addition of Umbras when we launched Temtem 1.0, and we carefully selected Season 5 because it coincided with the anniversary of Temtem's release. This gave us ample time to properly integrate Umbras into the game. Since Season 5 was already designated to showcase the new Mythical Temtem, it allowed us to seamlessly weave both elements together to create a cohesive narrative.
Q: What does an Umbra Temtem actually mean for the base critter outside of the darker base color palette and effect? Will Umbras have distinct effects on their moves as well?
Andrades: The Umbras are essentially similar to the Lumas we have seen before, with only minor alterations in appearance. However, this time, all Umbras share identical colors and effects to clearly differentiate them from Lumas.
In regards to the gameplay of Temtem, Umbras do not possess any distinct advantages. Nevertheless, every Umbra comes with impeccably optimized stats and has mastered all available egg techniques. They are completely prepared for action!
Jimenez mentioned that the Umbras concept originated as an inside joke during the early stages of Temtem's development. The art team was particularly fond of the idea, and they even experimented with it by creating Lumas that resembled darker versions of the Temtem.
Once the Umbras became a tangible feature, the team had a clear artistic vision in mind. They developed initial concepts prior to the launch of Temtem and dedicated themselves to refining the shader and VFX elements until they achieved the desired outcome.
A: How rare will Umbras be compared to Lumas? Will Luma Tems become more common or will their odds remain unchanged?
Andrades: Umbras are 10 times more uncommon than Luma Temtem, resulting in a default spawn rate of 1 in every 75,000 Temtem. Although this may seem incredibly high, new hunting techniques have been developed specifically for Umbras. The intention is for Umbras to be much rarer than Lumas, serving as a challenge for dedicated players.
Lumas are maintaining a constant presence, as we find them to be sufficiently abundant yet equally elusive to capture, especially for those who have recently ventured out from the endgame island.
Will Luma radars and other current Luma-hunting methods be effective for Umbra Tems as well, or will there be separate items and currencies for Umbra hunting? Will Umbras be included in the weekly Saipark selection? Andrades: The methods used to hunt Lumas and Umbras are similar but distinct. Techniques that increase the Luma encounter rate will not have the same effect on Umbras, so you will need to rely on Umbra-hunting methods (specifically Umbra radars) to successfully hunt Umbras.
Umbras will not be included in Temtem's Saipark, at least for the time being.
How do you anticipate Umbras will affect the game and its current market? Do you think Lumas might lose value in comparison to more uncommon Tems?
Andrades: When a Tamer captures an Umbras, they become Soulbound and cannot be traded. We deliberated on this decision and concluded that it is the most effective way to maintain their uniqueness and reward players for their dedication.
Furthermore, the methods of hunting Umbra also involve the possession of spare Lumas. As a result, we anticipate that Lumas will be even more highly regarded after this release!
Andrades: Designing a brand-new quest, route, and final battle for Umbras after a long break from PvE content release was an interesting experience. Despite the time gap, we had actually been planning this route since the game's inception, so we didn't have to start from scratch. The development process has been quite smooth thus far, with excellent teamwork and synchronization among all the teams involved.
Jimenez: After months of dedicating our time to creating cosmetics for Temtem, the art team welcomed the refreshing change of pace. It had been quite some time since we last ventured into designing a new Tem and route! Although we had been preparing for this moment, it was when we finally commenced development that our excitement and motivation peaked.
Recognizing that this particular aspect of the game held immense significance, we were determined to make it truly remarkable. Consequently, we boldly embraced new risks, venturing into uncharted territory. The end result fills us with immense satisfaction, and we sincerely hope that players find equal enjoyment in experiencing it, just as we did while crafting it!
Q: With the changes to Lairs and a new Mythical, do you expect there to be more Luma and Umbra Mythicals all around? Did you balance the odds with this in mind?
Andrades: Yes, we had anticipated this and it was the intention behind the modifications. Our aim has always been to maintain Luma Mythical Temtem as an exceptionally exceptional and unparalleled phenomenon, akin to a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity granted to a fortunate few users. Nevertheless, we have also observed that some users have expressed frustration over their inability to attain these Temtem. Thus, we have endeavored to incorporate an option to embark on the hunt for them, albeit acknowledging that it remains an arduous and protracted undertaking.
Q: Which Umbra Temtem do you personally favor and why?
Andrades: In my opinion, Volgon deserves praise for its intimidating appearance.
Irazu: Momo has always been one of my top favorite Tems, and her Umbra form is truly impressive. In terms of visual appeal, Nagaise also stands out for me.
Jimenez: Ah, the decision is quite challenging! However, my heart leans towards Innki, Aohi, or Thaiko - my treasured companions! Do you have any additional insights to disclose regarding the third Mythical Temtem and its upcoming Lair?
Galios is responsible for maintaining the archipelago's floating state and rotating Temtem's Pansun plates. Hence, we believed that a space or galactic theme would be an ideal fit for both Galios and its types.
Consequently, we aimed to present Galios with an ethereal appearance, as if its body consisted solely of space matter, with the earth plates surrounding it being the only defining feature. This concept is effectively portrayed in Galios' introductory cinematic.
The new Temtem Mythic Lair exemplifies this concept. It is fascinating how, during the final stage of the boss battle, it creates the illusion of being engulfed in a cosmic whirlwind.
Q: Another query remains - what is the process for producing eggs with either one or two Umbra parents? Can Umbra Tems mate with Lumas, and what are the probabilities for the appearance of the resulting offspring?
Andrades: In addition to their stat-perfection and Soulbound trait, Umbras are also unable to reproduce. This means that Umbra Tems cannot breed with one another. However, it is possible for a pair of Luma Tems to have an Umbra child... [END]
Temtem is available now for PC, PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series X/S.
