Tekken 8's official release date is yet to be announced, but with the recent developer updates and character reveals from Bandai Namco, it appears that the game will be coming out soon. Fans are eagerly anticipating the new sequel and are excited to see how it will surpass its predecessor. Directors Katsuhiro Harada and Kohei Ikeda have listened to the players' desires by providing a sneak peek at the new gameplay mechanics in a YouTube video earlier this year. The video showcased four key features of Tekken 8: the new Rage system, Recovery gauge, Heat system, and new control formats.
Tekken 8 has a high standard to meet and surpass, considering the mixed reception of Tekken 7 within the fighting game community. While it is widely regarded as one of the top 3D fighting games in terms of mechanics, the game has faced criticism for its unbalanced patches and overpowered characters like Akuma. With the upcoming Tekken 8, the developers aim to address these issues and introduce fresh mechanics that will change the game's meta. Players will need to familiarize themselves with these new mechanics to stay competitive.
Tekken 8 Gives Rage Arts an Update
Tekken's Rage System has been a fundamental aspect of the game since Tekken 6, and the developers consistently enhance it with each new installment. For newcomers to the franchise, Rage boosts the damage dealt by the player character when their health is low. This feature is represented by a crimson aura that emanates from the fighter and their health bar. The mechanic provides players with an opportunity to turn the tide of the battle or at the very least, boosts their confidence to persevere until the end of the round.
In Tekken 7, Rage Arts and Rage Drives were introduced. These are powerful special attacks that inflict more damage and can be unleashed when the character is in a Rage state. Each character possesses unique commands for their respective Rage Art. For beginners in Tekken 7, such as Paul, the strength of their Rage Arts often stood out. However, in Tekken 8, the direction and button combination for executing the Rage Art will be the same across all characters. Players only need to execute a forward diagonal down motion and simultaneously press both punches on the stick or R2 button on the pad. This change is a significant improvement for players who utilize multiple fighters, as they already have to familiarize themselves with their chosen character's extensive repertoire of moves and combinations. This uniform Rage Art command simplifies their experience without compromising the game's competitive integrity.
A Look into Tekken 8’s Newest Core Mechanic: The Heat System
Tekken 8's main feature, as explained by Harada, is the Heat System. According to Ikeda, when activated, the fighter goes into an awakened state for 10 seconds, creating opportunities for aggressive attacks. The activation of the Heat System is represented by blue flames surrounding the fighter, along with a gauge that depletes rapidly beneath their health bar. Additionally, players can initiate a Heat Burst by setting up a slam (R1), providing a slight advantage on hits, even if the opponent blocks.
Furthermore, players can activate Heat through special moves called "Heat Engagers". When successfully executed, their character automatically moves towards the staggered opponent, granting them a significant advantage in executing complex Tekken combos and supers. While in this heated state, players can also perform a Heat Smash by pressing the R1 button, which consumes all heat energy and deals significant damage to the enemy. Additionally, hitting the enemy helps maintain the heat gauge, and it even replenishes when attacks are blocked.
Introducing Tekken 8’s Special Style: A New Way to Play the Game
The depletion of the heat gauge occurs under several circumstances: when the timer reaches zero, when the enemy is knocked down, when the fiery fighter succumbs to the enemy's attacks, or when the player opts to execute the powerful Heat Smash move. Consequently, players have the strategic advantage of relentlessly pressuring their foes until they unleash a devastating, Heat-fueled assault.
It appears that major fighting games are taking steps to improve the experience for new players by introducing more user-friendly control methods. As reported on the Bandai Namco website, Tekken 8's latest feature, known as Special Style, incorporates the Assist and Easy Combo functionalities from its predecessor. This means that players now have the option to select a recommended move and combo for each button. Furthermore, these moves adapt to the current state of the fighter, be it normal, heat, or rage.
The designers and developers expressed their desire for players to have the experience of playing one of the top action games, rather than just a fighting game, when utilizing Special Style. This way, players wouldn't have to dedicate time and effort to memorizing and practicing complex commands, allowing them to focus solely on experimenting with each character to find their favorites. Additionally, players have the option of switching Special Style on and off during a match if they want to try out traditional commands. Given these considerations, it is recommended that Special Style be mainly utilized for casual play.
It is worth noting that Special Style may be enabled during online play, which has caused some experienced players to express dissatisfaction over the potential encounter with players who rely on automatic combos in the game's lobby. This situation mirrors the sentiments of Street Fighter 6 players regarding the game's Modern Mode. Similar to Special Style, Street Fighter 6's Modern Mode allows players to execute combos, supers, and specials without the need for complicated motion inputs, and it is also permitted in online play. Whether this novel control system will create an equal playing field for newcomers and professionals will be determined through testing in competitions and ranked matches.
Offense is the Best Defense: Tekken 8’s Recoverable Gauge
Tekken 8's upcoming addition, the recoverable gauge mechanic, brings a refreshing simplicity to gameplay. With every successful attack or blocked move, players will accumulate a gauge that gradually restores their health. This innovative system works in harmony with the already cherished Heat and Rage mechanics, creating a strong incentive for players to adopt a fast-paced and aggressive playstyle. The implementation of this mechanic promises thrilling and explosive matches in ranked battles and prestigious tournaments, including the highly anticipated Evo 2023. It is these exhilarating gameplay moments that will undoubtedly captivate both loyal fans and newcomers alike, fueling their excitement and motivating them to purchase Tekken 8. Currently, the game is in development for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S platforms.
