Taylor Swift is thriving on "fresh endeavors" and made sure her devoted fans were aware of this during The Eras Tour. In a sly manner, during her concert on Saturday, July 29, the acclaimed Grammy winner hinted at her sentiments concerning her previous romantic relationships and subsequent separations.
Swift performed the song "All of the Girls You Loved Before" for the Santa Clara, California audience. While singing the lyrics "Fake love out on the town / Cryin' in the bathroom for some dude / Whose name I cannot remember now," she shook her head and winked as captured in TikTok concert footage.
The pop star, who began her Eras Tour in Arizona in March, did not provide any further explanation for the wink or the lyric's meaning. However, fans began sharing their own theories on social media. One of Swift's surprise songs, "All of the Girls You Loved Before," was released earlier this year and included in her album Lover. With its romantic lyrics and connection to the 2019 album, fans immediately speculated that the track was dedicated to Joe Alwyn, Swift's partner of six years before their recent breakup. Alwyn also served as the inspiration for several other songs on Lover. After noticing Swift's wink on Saturday, fans believed that she was indicating that she has completely moved on from Alwyn, who is 32 years old.
"Damn, it's officially over," a tweet exclaimed on Saturday, assuming that the wink implied Swift had moved on from her relationship with the "Conversations With Friends" actor after their breakup in April. Another user chimed in, asserting, "It's definitely about Joe and Taylor."
Several individuals swiftly pointed out that the referenced lyric was likely not aimed at Alwyn, speculating that Jake Gyllenhaal was the more probable target. They believed that the line, "cryin' in the bathroom," harkened back to a similar line in Swift's extended version of "All Too Well," a song widely speculated to be about her intense romance and subsequent split with the 42-year-old "Brokeback Mountain" actor. (Neither Swift nor Gyllenhaal have ever confirmed the rumors regarding the song's inspiration.)
In "All Too Well," she sings about not crying in a party bathroom and being asked by an actress about what happened to her. This mirrors her experience of crying in a restroom mentioned in "All of the Girls You Loved Before."
Swift recently released her rerecorded album "Speak Now," and she had an enjoyable time during her two Santa Clara shows on Friday, July 28. To add to the magic, a fireworks display occurred during her performance of "Enchanted."
"Do you know why they did that? It's because I'm the mayor!" she joked on Saturday, referring to the honorary title bestowed upon her during her stay in the town for the duration of the Eras residency. "I was hoping it would happen tonight as well, and it did!"
