T-Mobile, reputed to have the most reliable 5G service in the US, has faced criticism for its questionable actions. The carrier attempted to force some customers on cheaper plans to switch to more expensive packages, requiring them to manually opt out if they wished to remain on the cheaper plan. This news received significant backlash, especially considering T-Mobile's failure to publicly announce the changes. As a result, the company has decided to completely abandon its plans, as announced by CEO Mike Sievert during the Q3 earnings call. T-Mobile had initially defended the actions, stating that it was merely a limited test that would not affect the majority of US users, but the intense negative attention ultimately forced the company to retract its plans entirely.
The CEO of the carrier expressed that they often conduct tests and pilots to determine the best approach. In this instance, they had conducted a test to gauge customer interest in and acceptance of transitioning from old legacy rate plans to higher value alternatives. However, the test information was leaked, giving the impression that it was a nationwide initiative, which was not the case. Due to the significant amount of feedback received as a result of the leak, the CEO believes that conducting the test is no longer necessary as it has become clear that the customers would not appreciate it.
The purpose of the test would have been to gather feedback from users, which the company has likely already obtained extensively through the leak. Although they did not expect the leak to generate such widespread attention, it would have been much more problematic if they had intended to carry out the test nationwide.
So if you're currently on a cheaper T-Mobile plan, you can rest easy knowing that the company will not change your plan or increase your bill behind your back.
