Prime Video will release The Horrors of Dolores Roach on July 7. Screen Rant has an exclusive clip from the horror comedy series, which is based on the popular podcast series by Gimlet Media. The show puts a contemporary spin on the story of Sweeney Todd. Justina Machado, known for her role in One Day at a Time, stars as Dolores, a woman who has been unjustly imprisoned for 16 years and faces more challenges upon returning to Washington Heights.
Season 1 of The Horrors of Dolores Roach consists of 8 episodes. Dolores is taken in by her friend Luis, played by Alejandro Hernandez, and lives in the basement of his empanada shop. She works as a masseuse until her survival instincts push her to commit another crime. This leads Luis to come up with a disturbing plan to hide the evidence by using the bodies in his empanadas. Thus, their unforgettable adventure begins.
More About The Horrors of Dolores Roach
Dolores Roach, the protagonist of The Horrors of Dolores Roach, faces threats and sexual harassment from a client. Despite his obliviousness, Dolores contemplates ending his life through a spinal injury. The client's mistreatment becomes a breaking point for Dolores after enduring hardships in the unjust prison system.
The above clip highlights the origins of Dolores' story, which originally began as a one-woman play called Empanada Loca. It was written by Aaron Mark and starred Daphne Rubin-Vega. The play later transformed into a podcast, with additional voice cast members such as Bobby Cannavale. Blumhouse Productions acquired the rights and has been developing a television series adaptation since 2019. The Horrors of Dolores Roach not only benefits from the involvement of the original author but also executive producer Gloria Calderón Kellett. This is because the story explores themes of systemic racism, gentrification, murder, and cannibalism.
The Horrors of Dolores Roach premieres July 7 on Prime Video.
