Supernatural creator Eric Kripke has a heartfelt response for fans who are missing the original series, The Winchesters, after its cancellation. The iconic show had a remarkable 15-year run and the thrilling adventures of Sam and Dean Winchester became a prominent part of WB and CW's lineup. Following the conclusion of Supernatural in 2020, The Winchesters was introduced as a prequel series, but it ultimately unfolded in a completely different universe. Despite the disappointment of The Winchesters' official cancellation after its first season, Kripke openly expresses his deep appreciation for the dedicated fans who continue to support Supernatural. Check out his tweet below:
Kripke's departure from the show in 2005 did not diminish his significance to the series. Although he has taken on the role of showrunner for The Boys, his affection for Supernatural and its devoted fan base endures.
In an attempt to reduce expenses and reach a different demographic, The CW has been shifting its focus away from scripted television. This shift has posed a significant threat to the survival of Supernatural and its beloved characters, particularly The Winchesters. Despite the optimism of Supernatural star Misha Collins (Castiel), the future appears uncertain for the series, especially after The Winchesters failed to secure a new home.
Attempts at spin-offs for Supernatural have been made in the past, such as Bloodlines exploring hunter-monster relations in Chicago. Another potential spin-off, Supernatural: Wayward Sisters, would have followed a group of sisters fighting against monsters. Unfortunately, neither of these series made it to air, which is a concerning sign for Supernatural. The show has had difficulty gaining traction with various concepts.
The issue with creating spin-offs for Supernatural lies in the fact that the core of the show has always been the relationship between Sam, Dean, and their chosen family. Their emotional connections were more central to the series than any of the supernatural beings or adversaries they encountered. Developing a spin-off focused on characters other than Sam, Dean, and possibly Castiel will always present a challenge due to this. If Supernatural were to continue in some form, it would likely need to remain true to the characters that initially made the show successful.
