He is known by many names such as The Last Son of Krypton, The Man of Tomorrow, The Man of Steel, and Big Blue, but we all recognize him as Superman. Recently, James Gunn announced a new lineup of DC Studios films, with Superman: Legacy at the forefront. Filming for this movie has begun, fittingly on Superman's birthday. However, there has been a change in the title.
The subtitle Legacy has been removed, marking the first Superman film since the classic by Richard Donner and Christopher Reeve in 1978. Gunn shared the excitement of beginning production on social media and explained the reason behind the name change.
The director shared his excitement about starting principal photography on SUPERMAN today, February 29. Interestingly, it is also Superman's birthday, although this was purely coincidental and unplanned.
After completing the initial draft of the script, I decided to name the film Superman: Legacy. However, as I finalized the script, it became evident that the title should simply be SUPERMAN. Look out for our film coming to you in July 2025.
The Superman insignia featured in the film bears a resemblance to the Kingdom Come costume designed by Alex Ross. This new design showcases a sharper outline with a thinner red border, incorporating brighter shades of yellow and blue reminiscent of Henry Cavill's costume from ten years ago. The emblem is depicted covered in snow, possibly alluding to Superman's arctic Fortress of Solitude. Rest assured, the iconic S still represents "hope."
Gunn was completely unaware of the significance of today until fans began reaching out to him on social media, catching him off guard.
In response to a comment on Threads, Gunn said, "I had been planning to start shooting today for months. I only found out it was Superman's birthday this weekend when people started asking, 'Are you going to post something for Superman’s birthday?!' It was a surprise."
The film Superman features Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor and David Corenswet as Superman. Other cast members include Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho. Skyler Gisondo plays Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio is Eve Teschmacher, and Terence Rosemore is Luthor's henchman, Otis.
Superman will be released in theaters on July 11, 2025.
Editor's P/S:
I am thrilled about the upcoming Superman film and the changes announced by James Gunn. The removal of the "Legacy" subtitle signals a fresh start for the character, while the coincidental filming commencement on Superman's birthday adds a touch of serendipity. Gunn's decision to streamline the title to simply "Superman" is a bold move, emphasizing the timeless nature of the icon.
The updated Superman insignia, with its sharper lines and brighter colors, evokes a sense of both tradition and modernity. The possible allusion to the Fortress of Solitude through the snow-covered emblem adds an intriguing layer of depth. The casting of Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor and David Corenswet as Superman is inspired, promising a dynamic and engaging on-screen rivalry. With a talented ensemble cast and Gunn's visionary direction, "Superman" has the potential to be a defining cinematic experience for fans of the beloved superhero.
