Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League and Unveil Unexpected DC Gaming Experiences

Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League promises to redefine DC storytelling in gaming, with Rocksteady's developers hinting at an exciting live-game future during a recent preview event

The developers at Rocksteady Studios are aiming to transfer the successful elements of their open-world Batman games to a cooperative, live-game format with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. However, a significant challenge arises - how can Rocksteady sustain a game titled "Kill the Justice League" after the Justice League has seemingly been defeated? At a recent Warner Bros. Games preview event, we had the opportunity to play Suicide Squad for approximately five hours. While the studio did not reveal details about the endgame, they did announce that future seasonal content and new playable characters will be provided for free. Rocksteady's production manager, Jack Hackett, also shared insights regarding the studio's long-term vision for the game.

Hackett's idea for Suicide Squad can be seen as two different games. There's the first part, focused on the Suicide Squad story where you take on the Justice League. Rocksteady did not provide any details about the endgame of Suicide Squad, but did mention that more characters with their own play styles and movement abilities will be added after the game is launched. Hackett also mentioned that Suicide Squad will offer Rocksteady the opportunity to tell additional stories in the future that may not have been made into games otherwise.

In an interview with Our Website, Hackett expressed his belief that creating a live-service game in the DC universe allows for the exploration of lesser-known characters, stories, and locations that wouldn't typically receive attention in a standalone video game. He explained that while the upcoming Suicide Squad game offers a compelling standalone experience, it will also serve as a launchpad for playing as unconventional protagonists and discovering new aspects of the DC lore. Hackett emphasized the opportunity to take the game to unexpected places and incorporate elements that might not traditionally be the focus of a self-contained story. As a DC fan himself, he noted that there are plans in the works for content that he never expected to see in a DC video game.

While Suicide Squad is a live game designed for continuous replayability, Hackett mentioned that it is not intended to be an endless grind like other similar games. It was previously announced by Rocksteady that all post-launch content and extra playable characters for Suicide Squad will be available for free. According to Hackett, this removes the pressure of "getting your money's worth" for players and allows them to engage with the content that interests them, for as long as they want to play.

Hackett stated that Rocksteady has focused on making the game adjustable and replayable for those seeking that experience, but he also emphasized that the game is meant to offer more than just that.

"I hope that people, even long after the game is released, will be excited to see there's an update with a new character and new place. It should be like, 'That's cool, I want to go and check that out, play for a bit then take a break and come back later.' I believe that's enjoyable. It can be engaging without feeling like a second job. Visit and see the new thing. Some people may want to be at the top of the world leaderboard or master every optimization for Deadshot, creating YouTube guides and competing, and that's fun for them. But not all players need to be that dedicated to still enjoy coming back to the game."

Hackett compared the stories in Suicide Squad to the unfolding of comic storylines. The contained story in Suicide Squad is comparable to a crisis event in the world of comics, he explained.

"Comic books have excelled in the art of weaving self-contained stories that seamlessly connect to larger narratives for a century," he stated. "We took inspiration from this well-established model for our central comic book event. Just like in the comics, a crisis event doesn't mean the end of all stories. It's not like, 'And then there were no more Suicide Squad comics.' They continue, and we aim to mirror this structure here."

Hackett explained that revealing too much about the endgame of Suicide Squad would spoil the eventual outcome of the story. However, he emphasized the importance of players understanding the long-term structure of a live game, and assured that Rocksteady plans to disclose more details closer to the game's release.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League releases on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC on February 2.
